Wow, I didn't realize that this puppy holds 7 quarts with filter......
More than I'm used to, and 5-20 is a weight I've never used before as well.
I've always been a 10-30 guy, but they told me that this engine with all it's precise clearances needs the thinner 5-20. Oh well, I'm not a wrench head, so I will do what they say.....along with the owners manual and printing on the filler cap.

Holds more oil because of the variable valve thing (just like some VTEC aplications in Honda's) Something to do with oil pressure to actuate the cam shift from 2 valve to 3.
The 5-20 is because it gives an ever so slight MPG boost, all auto manufactuers are doing this now. In mass it makes enough of a differance that they get less penalty for gas guzzler cars.

I kind of have a question for Brad, or for someone at Ford. Is there any way that we could get official confirmation from Ford on what the oil fill capacity is for the 2005 4.6L V8 engine (with filter) ? It seems strange that the manual would say one thing, and that the dealer techs would say another.

I'll assume that the service techs know best.

The Mustang spec sheet says 6 qts for the engine, and half quart for the filter.

That should do it.
Just noticed that you just got your Mustang holderca1. Congrats.

holderca1 - thanks for that document ! It is really neat, and it is the most complete set of specs that I have seen on this car. How did you find it ? Also, I don't want to stir things up, but after looking at it, my take on the oil capacity is 6 qts full, and it is less 0.5qts for the filter, or 5.5qts without the filter.

Yeah I was confused by that as well, but if you look under the V6 column it says add one quart for filter, not sure why they would do it different under the GT column. Also if you look over to the left, it say capacity less the filter, So I would imagine that is the capicty without the filter, but who knows, I will just take it to Ford to change the oil, that way I won't have to worry about messing it up myself. I found when I was looking around on the Ford site.

Changed my oil last week myself, and it took only 6 quarts with a new filter. I filled it to the middle of the XXX's on the oil dipstick, I remembered reading a thread about how the extra notch higher up on the dipstick was not the top fill point, but the top of the xxx's was. I also thought I remembered reading about how overfilling your engine with oil is bad, so I wanted to make sure I didnt do that.

You might want to check the level on the dipstick. They may have over-filled it.
