Ok, so i reached about 3,000 miles and wanna change my oil. I was wondering how many people here have changed their own, or have gone to the dealer for at least the 1st change. I have heard that the filter is a pain to get off for the first time. any input would be helpful.

I am changing mine tomorrow, if you dont do it by then i'll let you know how easy it is. I dont trust anyone to work on my car but myself and my about 3 people, with that being said I would do it yourself just so you know it is done right and the oli filter is not threaded to tight, but anyways I'll post tomorrow after i do it

I think that I read the same posts about taking off the oil filter,
but I had no problem.

I had mine done at 1250, and will have it done again next weekend at approx 3000. From there, only every six months or so since I won't be driving it much.
Oil changes are so cheap I don't bother w/ the hassel of buying the supplies, jacking the car, getting hot oil dripping down my forearm...
Besides, didn't your dealer offer you your first oil change free?

I plan on changing just the filter at around 2k, topping off the oil with motorcraft synthetic blend, and then going for the free oil change at 5k. Then 5k from there on out.

I like to do them myself, typically.

Can you change just a filter without dumping the oil out? I didn't know you could. I guess you probably could if the filter was high enough on the block But if you're going through all that hassle, why not pull the plug and put fresh in?
Just curious, hoping to learn something.

I think as the engine breaks in, fine metal particles get trapped in the filter. There are more of these when the engine is new, so I figure change the filter to keep them from dislodging and doing some damage. The oil additives remain good for around 5k, whether it's the first 5k or 105k. Less wasteful.

I think when you unscrew the filter all your oil is going to dump everywhere, so you might want to rethink that through. I'm not a mechanic so I could definitely be wrong, but thats my prediction. As for what I'm doing, and this isnt necessarily the right or wrong way, just my opinoin.

I'm going to change out the oil and the filter at about 1500, with 5W-20 full synthetic, and then every 5000 after that.

Hope that helps. Dave

You can just change the filter, but some oil will drain out. most of it will be in your oil pan.
Happy Trails!!

so, has anyone changed it themselves and had problems getting it off? I'm tempted to try it today since I actually have a say off from work, or I can wait till next week when I will have more days free and make an appoinment with me dealer. But by then I expect to be at 3300 miles, but from what I just read here, that should still be ok.

Had mine changed at the dealer at 1500... going this weeka nd have done again at 3100 since it has been in just over 3 months... I would check with dealer- I am getting mine done for $9.00 so it beats the price of oil off the shelf

The only oil you will lose if you just change the filter, is the oil that is in the filter itself.
