Did anyone try to order a '94 back in the day? Was it this difficult to get? Is this history repeating itself?

It was so bad that I did not even try. The cars were not stocking up on the lots untill early summer of 1995. Prices were above MRSP. I lost interest and leased a Mark VIII for $20 more a month than a T-Bird SC, on A-plan at the time it was an awesome deal.

That's an excellent question! The situation might have been similar, but it probably seemed worse, because forums like TMS were not around to help folks cope!

i ordered my 99 and never had problems with the order like this one. Took about 6 weeks. This 05 one is pushing 16.

Then again my 99 is a V6, but same concept i think.

If ford would have been smart they should have increased production capacity and lowered prices. With a V6 starting at 14K and a GT at 20K I bet they would have sold 400,000-500,000 stangs.

I wonder if it was anything like this in 64 and 65 after the debut at the World's Fair?

I was only a toddler at the time.

Just for some perspective, what must this have been like?

Ford introduced the Mustang in 64 1/2. The demand for that car was incredible and without our modern tools to view and track the production and delivery process. By the middle of the 66 model year, Ford introduced the special addition Sprint 200 to celebrate a milestone. The milestone? The 1 MILLIONTH Mustang!

We are having these problems with what, 150K projected for this year?

Maybe....MAYBE the first year but it would tail off quickly after that and then you'd have all that excess capacity sitting idle. Chrysler got bit with that on PT Cruiser. I think Ford learned from that experience.

It's simple economics... High Demand = Low Supply. So Ford has three options at this point.

A) Increase production, which will be a losing venture when the market finds an equilibrium
B ) Increase price, which will reduce demand but again hurting for in the long run as this is the "affordable" muscle car. Increasing prices (drastically, not $200 here and there) would sour their customer base.
C) Do nothing and wait for the market to reach equilibrium. The current state is a dream situation for any retail venture. Your selling the most you can make while making maxim profit. It'll eventually level off and you won't be burned by making poor economic decisions.

I pre-ordered a 1994 GT same as I did with my '05. The car took 5 months from order to delivery due to a material hold on two 'Hot' options.
The brand new Mach 460 sound system and leather interior ... Ford had underestimated demand .. sounds familiar doesn't it.

I also purchased in 1987. By June (when I was looking to buy) of that year GT's were sold out and the dealers did not expect any until the 1988's hit in late summer of 1987. I purchased a clean used one with 3,00 miles on it for a really good price.

Funny how as much as things change they stay the same!
