My job sometimes takes me to one of Ford's vehicle mixing centers, where cars are transferrered from trucks to trains and vice versa. Among the thousands of new Mustangs, I've spotted a few V-6s with black steel wheels. At first I assumed that they were going to Roush, Saleen, or another aftermarket tuner to be converted, but the one that I checked out was going to a regular dealership in Maryland. Any ideas?

maybe the dealer is just going to fit it with their own upgraded wheels and its cheaper to buy the cars from Ford with those? That's just a wild guess, since I've heard people talk about dealerships really going crazy on some of the V6 models, changing parts and what not

Don't know, maybe they are standard and don't have the hub caps put on them yet

More importantly is that Mustang Orange!?!?!?!?!

They just haven't fitted the hubcaps to it yet.

Well, as far as I know, the V-6s come standard with alloys, so it isn't a matter of the cars just not having the wheel covers put on yet. Mustangs no longer come with wheel covers. It's gotta be something earmarked for upgraded wheels from the dealer or something.

Yup, the hubcap explanation doesn't fly

actually, someone on this forum was a pic with a V6 with hubcaps so there is a chance that this is a possible option. Not a good one, but still a good chance that you can get, shiver, hubcaps.

And I think the Mustang in front is actually Torch Red. I didn't take a lot of time checking it out, as security is fairly tight, and I'm not sure how they'd feel about me snapping pictures on my phone.

For '06 the V-6 Mustang comes in three trims:

Standard
Deluxe
Premium

The Standard is a base Deluxe car with steel wheels and hub caps.
They are all over at the dealers around here, check 'em out.

Wasn't it decided in another thread that the V6 "Standard" version came with silver hubcaps on top of steel wheels? In that case, wouldn't the hubcaps probably be in the trunk while the car is being shipped?

I checked the Ford web site here, and 16" steel wheels are listed as Not Available, but they are listed. Maybe a fleet option for rental cars? Still, a black styled steel wheel doesn't make sense. I'm not even sure a wheel cover would fit. It seems like if they were meant to stay on the car, they'd at least be painted silver. Unless there were trim rings and center caps sitting right inside the car...

My mistake, I didn't think Ford would put hubcaps on the new Mustangs... kinda dissappointing- I've never seen one though

They're not listed there, because the "Standard" version is not listed there. Only the "Deluxe" and "Premium" versions are listed on that page. I believe that someone posted a few pictures of the wheels with the hubcaps on them in a thread somewhere.

It is simply a car withought the new hubcaps on. This new hubcap design was already posted on this site on a car on lot.

I wish I could have gotten steel wheels and hubcaps for my 05 GT. It would have been much easier for me to get the chrome Bullitts then.

Those might make nice rims for DR or Slicks . . .

Well, that settles the mystery. They actually don't look too bad for plastic covers. I wonder if they'd fit the 16" steelies I have for my winter tires. I kinda doubt it.

Would be a nice alternative for winter rims IMO

Actually, if you throw a trim ring on it, a center cap and some nice lugnuts, that may make a poor mans blackout rim.
