Hey mustang gurus,
Recently, I slid.
I slid into a curb.
And I bent my right axle shaft to the point that it physically impedes my wheel.
The left axle managed to bend as well, but not as devastating.
Thankfully, no body damage, but I wonder to what extent damage could be in the axle housing? My auto guy says he won't be able to tell until replacing the shafts.
It would cost me around $500 to replace the axle shafts, but if something turns out to be messed up in the housing...would it be best to go ahead and replace the entire assembly? Possibly with SVT one? (Ford Racing SVT Mustang Rear Axle Assembly (05-12 GT/GT500) M-4001-SVT373 - Free Shipping!) My heart tells me to go ahead and upgrade.

Ouch, been there. I went through my insurance and the body shop replaced the axle half shaft, can't remember what else. But the axle tube was intact. Gears weren't damaged nor bearings. Four years later, my diff started moaning and I had to have the dealer rebuild the unit. I can't say if its related or not but it makes we wonder.
But if you want total piece of mind, replace the unit. If you do just the shafts, get the bearings too (not sure if its required or not).
Is your wheel damaged? I seriously bet the rim is bent. Possibly the brake rotor too (a buddy had that happen to his front after hitting a curb in his Bullitt)
Another thing to check is the panhard rod (maybe swaybar too). Mine bent and the axle was shifted to the opposite side of the crash.

I just put that axle on my stang, so far... absolutely love it. It apparently needed some extra things though according to the mechanic. Wish I could remember exactly, but I think it was a bearing, vent, and a plug for the rear diff.
So be prepared for that if ya upgrade.

That sucks. I, too, have slid into a curb...turns out stock struts are expensive. If you end up needing the whole assembly and don't want to spend quite that much: http://www.newtakeoff.com/mustang_gt..._trac-loc.aspx
