I went to change my oil today with approx 1100 miles on my 05 GT and I noticed that it has used some oil (from the full dot to the top of the hash marks). Is this normal? Please let me know any information you might have. Thanks in advance!

It is not uncommon for a motor to use some oil before it breaks in and the piston-rings fully seat. I would not worry unless it keeps happening long term.

I was told many years ago that a new engine may use a little at first until the rings wear in... But with the manufacturing processes and tolerances of today, I don't know if that still holds any water.

Now the way you check your oil can affect the results - in the interest of consistency, are you checking on a cold engine each time?

Its not a rotary engine...shouldn't be using oil.

Thanks for all of your replies. I checked it this morning after sitting all night in my garage. This is where I check it every time. I have been monitoring it on a consistent basis since I bought the car. I just got back from a 300 mile trip and it used a small amount when I checked it after I got back.

Do you think that I should talk to my dealer regarding this problem or should I wait until the next oil change to say anything?

I wouldn't worry about it.....after all, you've got 3-years or 36,000 miles to address this. After about 5,000 miles, if you are still experiencing a usage of oil, then address it with your dealership.....but right now enjoy your Mustang.

I wouldn't worry if I were you hifly. I have owned quite a few new cars and this is perfectly normal in the beginning

You would be wasting your time to discuss this with the dealer, unless the car is using a significant amount of oil. I think the guidelines are about a quart in 1000-1500 miles. The engine needs to break in for a couple thousand miles to have the rings completely seat. Using the engine to break the car when slowing down can cause increased oil usage.

hmmmmm....correct me if I am wrong (not sure that I am since I use to work at a garage changing oil on cars), you do not necessarily have to fill to the "full mark". A lot of places only fill to the top of the hash marks which means that is all you need to put in the car.

How do you know it used a small amount? If you mean the oil is showing up 1mm lower on the stick that is not very accurate to say "it is using oil".

I was waiting to put in synthetic until 3000 miles so until then I put in Castrol 5-20. The oil that was showing signs of usage was the oil from the factory. When I got the car the oil level was at the full dot and now it is at the top of the hash marks. If you all think that it is normal that works for me. Thanks for all of your replies. One other question do you think that castrol is a good oil and if so do you think that the castrol syntec is a good synthetic?

Modular motors s.u.c.k. (curse weiner dale and his censors :P) a huge amount of oil through the PCV, especially if driven at higher RPMS for extended periods of time. Unless you are seeing oil drippings on the floor or noticable plumes of blue smoke out your tailpipes, I wouldn't worry about it.

*edit*
I can go through a quart in an open track event. Be very mindful of your oil level on these cars. Too little and bye-bye bearings.

Modular engines are very well known for stinking down a bit of oil, broken in or not. Just check it periodically.

I use RP's synthetic for the mustang. It comes in a 5w20.
