I drive with the windows down and the compressor off until it hits 85. After that its compressor on and windows up. Running the AC seems to kill off about 15 percent. On my last tank 22.3 mpg combined.

Tow your stang with a MoPed! That will save you a few bucks! And you'll get exercise too For me, pedal to the medal! My other car (2500HD) gets 11 in town, 14 on the highway. I feel like the Mustang is a hybrid.

Here's what I do when I'm on a road I don't think it's safe to speed, I'm bored, and I feel like trying to up my MPG. I have a manual Mustang GT.

1. Put her in neutral and coast as much as possible. Coast to red lights so they'll change and you won't have to slow down all the way. Coast down hills. Around my g/f's area, there's this 2 mile stretch of road where I can coast the whole way!

2. Shift points. Keep them as low as possible. The lower your RPMs, the less fuel you use. Gotta be careful, though. Anything under 1200 RPM and you'll lug the motor. Don't use the engine to brake (downshift). Always put it in neutral and coast. Oh, and don't blip the throttle.

3. If I'm at an extremely long red light (1.5 minutes or more) I'll cut my motor.

4. Make sure your tires are properly inflated... you can go one or two psi over if you wish to help bump up the mileage a smidge. No more than one or two psi, though.

5. The brake is your enemy. When you brake, you bleed off energy. The more you brake, the more you have to accelerate. Consistent speed is the key to better MPG. Try to use it as little brake as possible. Always try to anticipate potential stops/slow downs and coast or avoid them at all costs.

6. On the highway, I find going over 70 tends to reduce your MPG slightly. If I'm being fuel conscious, I try to keep my speed at 70. Keep a light and STEADY foot. Feed the car just enough fuel to keep it at 70, and rememberr to put her in neutral (if ya have a manual) and coast down hill.

The best MPG I've ever gotten was 27.1. Keep in mind, I don't do this all the time. In fact, I usually drive the car quite hard. I do it just once in awhile on the 45 mile trip home from my g/f's if I'm bored and I want a unique challenge to keep myself busy. Keeps me awake. It can be sorta fun. For instance, since the goal is to use the brake as little as possible, I usually take on/off ramp turns as fast as possible to avoid braking.

I agree with many others in this thread, though. If you want fuel economy, there are plenty of cars out there that offer that. Don't expect to ring much more than the 25 highway MPG that it's rated for.

All this talk about fuel conservation makes me want to get in the Mustang and do a few clutch drops, lol.

I just got out of my 1990 5.0 GT HB w/mods into the 05 V6, gas mileage I'm totally jazzed with what I'm getting now. Used to get 12 - 14 MPG in the 5.0.

When I picked mine up Monday evening, it was at 6.5 mpg. After driving it 110 miles, it has gone up to 12.5, and that is entirely city driving with me being anything but kind to it. I am hoping it will continue to climb until it reaches the 16-17 mark.

like many have already said it's a mustang,

sure, you could put your foot on a diet, but nobody likes going on a diet.

My last Mustang was a 1977 Mach II and was a total POS. I was lucky to let 11-12 mpg on the highway. I have been scared of Mustangs ever since but am looking forward to ordering a '06 GT.

Charlie, thanks for all the tips. I was the one who originally started all this. It's been great to hear the many varied opinions.

So far with 8 days of owning my V6 I've averaged about 16 mpg. It's only seen about 30 highway miles, and the rest 150 are with moderate to heavy city traffic.
