I tried to test drive an automatic GT but my dealer would not let me. So I had to settle for the automatic V6.

I am trying to decide between a standard or automatic. I live in Charlotte NC and the traffic is crazy bumper to bumper all the time and a standard would get annoying after a while. But I want something that will allow me to be able to spin the tires. If I were to get a GT Auto would there be enough power so the tires will be able to spin on dry pavement. And is the performance as good as it would be with the stick??

Thanks
jsmth

the word is, if you aren't pretty darn good at driving a stick, the auto is going to be hard to beat in the quarter mile.
I haven't driven one, but I'm pretty sure because of the gear ratio that if you stand on the go pedal from a stop, you'll be spinnin'. I'd prefer not to have an auto in the case of trying to oversteer, but I imgine you'll be able to slide her out sideways too if you want to.

You won't have any problem spinning the tires if you turn off the traction control and most people are turning in better 1/4 mile times with automatics unless it is a very good driver in the car with manual tranny.

again, I don't know how the lockout is on the torque converter, so if you're plannin' serious weekend driving where you're relying on oversteer, I'm not sure how the auto will do that... I'm not sure if it's going to allow you to hold it in a specific gear..... I had an AOD (POS) that I could hold in first, or 2nd or 3rd and use the stick to downshift if that's what I wanted (for the most part).... and I don't know how this auto works, but if you're lookin' for a daily driver, and perhaps a bit of light to light racing (THAT'S A NO NO AND IS NOT CONDONED ) then the auto will suit you well.... plenty of ability to do a little smokey and it'll sh:t n' git in the quarter.

I drove an auto GT. You can oversteer with it, but it's a bit tough. I'm a manual guy all the way.
