I'm not sure what context the word tune was used in, but it was probably referring to a re-tune of the engines computer. Basically, timing, shift points (for automatics), and RPMs can be altered. Also modifications like gears, intake, exhaust, and engine internals can be incorporated into the tune so that you can get the most out of your additions/changes. All these changes help the performance of your car a lot.

If you're referring to that "word" being used on this forum, most likely someone was referring to the tuning of the vehicle's computer with an "tuner", and programer.

I do not know what context of the word I was using, sorry. I have just seen ‘tune’ and did not really know what that meant.

Another question... My car is an automatic and its shift points are good, I think. It doesn't shift until it gets pretty high on the RPM's. Isn't that what you pay quite a bit for a kit that does the same thing? On those tuner-programmers, they do more than just adjust your shift points? That is all I remember hearing.

My jacked-up brain makes this all very new to me! Once I hear it, it’s long-gone! This way I can print it out and keep it!!

yeah the tuners can adjust spark timing to adjust for higher octane gas. also most can change shift firmness on the auto transmission too. not sure if the ford ones do but my friends camaro had that option.

You can do a few things with, ignition timing, spark degree, rev limiter, adjust fro gears/tires, check engine diagnostic and best of all data logging so you can record your runs.
Throttle position, a/f ratio, engine temp, engine revs, speed, brake position, maf voltage, air temp, air density, etc, etc, etc can all be recorded and looked over with a pc later on.
I like my GTech because it gives me an instant readout (LCD) on rpm's speed, lateral G's, est horsepower and est torque, reaction time and again etc etc etc.
The GTech is for fun and the XCal if for serious tuning. Together they give you a good idea on how your can runs with different 'tunes' and just how bad a driver you really are!!!
