I'm thinking about getting a shift kit in about a year, and I just want to know if it's even worth getting. I've been told with just a shift kit your 1/4 mile time drops nearly 1/2 a second. If this is true, then it's probably worth it...
But, do I have to get the tranny rebuilt?
Also, is there anything better I could do to get about the same results?

I thought you had a 5 spd? If so, all you need is a shifter top ones running around $180(Steeda, Pro 5.0, and MGW). I believe UPR makes one that's a little cheaper, depending on budget.
There shouldn't be a need for a tranny rebuild on a 5spd.

research the "Jerry Mod" on http://www.tccoa.com. Jerry W. now of SCT worked for ford and designed the valve body in the 4r70w and the jerry mod is a way of making the tranny better. You will want/need a tune as well, I recommend Doug904 of http://www.bamachips.com. Also another great thing for an auto based car is a tranny cooler. Summit racing sells some good kits that come with everything you need.

shift kit is probably cheaper, but I think the j-mod is possibly better. If you can find a shop that will install the j-mod or if you can order a valve body already prepared, that would be the way I would go. I know Dennis Reinhart of http://www.reinhartautomotive.com did alot of cars using the J-mod and they may sell the valve bodies now.
