I have never raced on the street and I still don't approve "but" I hang my head in shame because I did street race. It's a three lane road just outside of the main part of town and it has a perfect open stretch from one light to the next, good half mile or so with no homes or stores, wide open. I was at the light when a new Z4 pulled up (2.5 model) and when the light turned green I took off like I always do and I think he took it as a challange. He got even with me so I gunned it and took off he pulled even again and I was still pulling when he had to shift gears again and I just kept pulling away. He was starting to come back up and we had to stop at the next intersection. He gave me a thumbs up and turned off. I slapped my own hand already so don't lecture, I won't do it again.

I don't know if he was a bad driver or not. I don't know the performance numbers on my car with my mods but I don't think it's that much over stock. I might go do the dyno thing after I get my x-pipe. Here's the stats on the BMW.

Base price : $33,100

Engine : 6 cylinder, DOHC, front engine RWD
Displacement : 2,494 cc
Valve : 24 valves, 4 valves per cylinder
Transmission : 5-spd manual, 5-spd automanual, 5-spd SMG
Fuel economy : city - 20-21 mpg
highway - 28 mpg

Horsepower : 184 hp @ 6000 rpm
Torque : 175 lb-ft @ 3500 rpm
Redline : unknown

Top speed : 147 mph
0-60 mph : 6.7 sec.(manual)
0-¼ mile : 15.1 sec @ 91.3 mph(manual)
60-0 braking distance : 112 ft
200 ft skidpad : 0.93 g

Curb Weight : 2932-2998 lbs
Overall length : 161.1 in.
Wheelbase : 98.2 in.
Overall Width : 70.1 in.
Height : 51.1 in.

I know. :bang:

I just wonder what my hp is now. I don't know what the original 0-60 times and 1/4mile times are for a stock 97GT with an automatic.

Some times you just have to do what you have to do. Just don't let me see you racing school buses.

My (17 year old...) friend has a brand new Z4 and he has about 225 hp, there are different engines, so he could of had more. They really aren't too nice of cars for what they are supposed to be. Everyone thinks that they are extremely light with ample horsepower, however they weight right at 3,000 pounds which isn't too impressive. They still are pretty nice/fast cars though.

I don't street race nearly as much as I used to. Maybe because the risk is too great for me at times ,or maybe I just lost some interest. Heck, I hardly even dog the car anymore. Point is, I've been stopped at least 4 times for racing and I was let go 3 of the 4 times. I was ticketed with one, but it was dismissed because I challenged it and the cop didn't show (Thank God). I'm not even 21 yet and I realized I don't need something like that on my record seeing as they continue to come down harder on street racing everyday. If you street race, choose your battles wisely.

You mean on a controlled enviroment such as movies, where everything turns out OK all the time and everyone walks off to the sunset with background music and a gorgeous dame to live another day, right? In real life it is slightly less predictable.

There is a big difference in what one plans and hopes for and what actually develops. To think otherwise is naive at the very least.

Here's the stats on the BMW.
....

Horsepower : 184 hp @ 6000 rpm
Torque : 175 lb-ft @ 3500 rpm
Redline : unknown
...
0-60 mph : 6.7 sec.(manual)

Don't sell your kill short over the stats

You probably know the numbers above are peak HP and acceleration times generated by dropping the clutch (or auto shifter) at redline, which often doesn't come up on the street.

Unfortunately, the car rags often omit the "street start" times which are a little more realistic sometimes.

I had a girlfriend with a Mercedes SLK 2.3 with the supercharger, who was always bugging me to race her in my '95 convertible 5.0

On paper, they both had around a 7 second 0-60 time.

I was thinking "Small, light, $40K car with almost 200 (peak) hp against old, heavy cheap car with about 215hp" and was fully prepared to lose.

What I should have been thinking was, "Car with automatic transmission and no torque at low RPM an against 5.0 with 300 ft lbs, 3.55 gears and 5 speed"

Light turns green, I go sideways for a second then hook up.

I turned to see how close it was, expecting maybe to have half a length on her, and she just wasn't there

She was not happy.

You won the race, but lost the girl.

What a great story!

This movie belongs on Spike TV!
