Reasonable price for '97 Cobra?

I recently looked at a 1997 SVT Cobra that is for sale by a local car dealership in my area...its completely stock, perfect body with no dings, great paint (I believe its rio red, but I could be wrong in the particular shade), perfect interior (beige leather), manual transmission with the chrome FRPP Cobra R wheels and Nitto 555's, and the odometer reads 93,XXX miles...

....the dealer wants 8k for the car...I have looked at kelly blue book and nada pricing, but didn't know if this price is unreasonable or not...I hope someone can give an opinion with the limited info I gave given...Thanks in advance!

Not a bad price all things considered, but you could prob get em to 7 if you really tried. Id get it checked out by a unbiased shop first off though before you commited. I know 93k is alot of miles, but i sold my 96 mystic with 140k on the clock and it still ran strong as ever. I would have the shop do a compression check on the motor just to be on the safe side.

thanks for the advice, Scothew...I am supposed to go there this afternoon to take it for a test drive with my father who's going to look it over as well...not to mention, my father is much better at negotiating and grinding people down on a price, so we will see how far they will be willing to go. I have kept a close eye on this car and it has been there for about a month now so I would expect there to be some flexibility on the price...

If the car is in the good condition you speak of, I think $8000 is a fair price. You should be able to talk him down 500-1000 on the asking price. I recently saw a mint condition, low mile (38k) 98' Cobra at a local dealer in my area sell for $10,000 so $8000 doesn't sound bad.

I guess my 97 GT is pretty much worthless by now lol....

I test drove it last night and went with my father...the car was tight, drove really nice...they have all the documentation, printed a carfax report, everything seems on the up and up...when I brought up negotiating the price they immediately went on the defensive and said the price was firm, which seemed odd to me becaue the car has been on the lot for at least a month. It surprised my father and I that they wouldnt even go down anything if I threw down half the price and financed from them the rest, since they get kick backs from financing...I am not in the car business, but I would tend to think they would go down a little on the price for a car that isn't moving off the lot anytime soon, especially since we are closing in on winter....

The salesman and the manager just kept stating that it is a rare car, in great shape, they've had alot of people interested in it and that it was priced below blue book....then I repeatedly said how it's still not sold.

I told the salesman do call me if they decide to go down on the price.

So that is where I am with this as of right now.

I think you will be getting a call soon. Good for you on not calling their bluff. I went through the same thing a couple years ago when I bought my Cobra. After 3 days the seller agreed to my original offer. Even if you don't end up getting this one i'm sure you will find another one if you keep looking.

Good Luck

thanks... I think they will call me back because I really don't think that many people are looking for that car, and not to mention most people can get financed easier for a new car, not an 11 year old car...I have a feeling they probably thought I was just bs'ing because I am twenty one, but I have always been enamored with the '95 and '97 Cobra's, but all of the ones that I look at are clustered with aftermarket parts, and different headlights and taillights and have been beat on.

I know the feeling man, your average used Cobra is usually abused. A couple years back (i'm about 5 years older than you) I was obsessed with owning a yellow 98' Cobra coupe and searched literally for years for a clean example for a fair price. I never got the 98' but it still worked out for the best. Eventually I scored my 03' because everyone was ditching their 03-04 Cobras and Mach1s for the new 05' Mustangs. I guess the point of the story is just be patient, if this deal falls through you should be able to find another one. Honestly it will probably be easier for you than it was for me because of the crappy economy. I found a red 99' Cobra down the street from me in pretty good shape with 85k on it for $8500.........just keep your eyes open.

Hang in there. When I bought my 04 Cobra Conv't new the dealer jerked me around for four hours making me think he might consider my offer of $32,900 and then when it came down to it wouldn't budge off thier $41,600. price. Thirty days later I get a call from thier fleet manager asking if I was still interested. I told her yes but my $32,900 plus tax and Lic. still stood. She tried twice with other offers but I stuck to my guns. She than said she would run it by her Gen.Mgr and call me the next day. Well they took my deal.. so I got a great deal on my car. With only 13K miles it may still be worth what I paid for it.

I am hoping something will happen with the situation...I looked at a '96 Cobra the other day and it was nothing the guy said it was...140k miles, ragged interior, dirty engine bay, rock chips covering the front, worn tires, scraped wheels that werent even the right style wheels for the year, hacked aftermarket exhaust...it was a nightmare, and he wanted 7,900 USD...I could only laugh

This is just a thought, have you considered a 99'-up GT? If you are not 100% set on getting a 96-98 Cobra you can pick up a low mile 99' GT for considerably less money than a Cobra with about the same performance.

I was debating on another thread and the 99-04 GTs are basically just as fast as the 96-98 Cobras. I figured I'd just toss that out there as another option to somewhat affordable speed.

I had looked at some, but around here people want too much...I actually called on a 99 Cobra, but the guy loaded the car with too many aftermarket stuff...thats the problem, I'm OCD and want to find one completely stock, unmolested...I would rather just mod my '89 GT, an continue to take it to my local drag strip. Conversely, I would like a completely stock Cobra to take to shows, etc. It doesn't even need to be low-mileage, just stock, clean....hard to find around here.
