Real value of a 1996-98 (early 4.6L cars)
Hello everyone, I'm hear to ask people's honest opinions about the early 4.6 GT Mustangs. I know that these cars along with the Mustang II are kind of the unloved forgotten Mustangs but what would you pay for one? What did you pay for yours and when? What will be the legacy of these once very popular vehicles?
I ask because of my struggles to sell my well taken care of 1997 GT. I have been mulling over a $4000 offer on my GT. I was hoping to get closer to $5000, is it worth more than 4000? This car was loaded for 1997, leather, mach460, premium wheels and in the rare deep violet metallic paint. The car is an automatic coupe and it has just over 93,000 miles.
Personally I am baffled that fox body cars are seemingly worth much more than early SN95 cars. Will these cars ever get a second look or will a clean 1994-98 Mustang begin to disappear from American roadways?

I bought my 98 GT pacific green auto with 82,000 for 4,000 from a local dealer. I feel I got a great deal. The 96-98 stangs just dont sell for a lot. The 95 with 5.0 is more sought after because of how cheap those parts are. We are stuck with the crappy heads and low HP..But i still love the car. With a few mods its not bad. But I think if you get 4,500 U will be lucky.

KBB with the options I added shows 3500 in VG condition. Check it out and run the numbers and options again and see what you come up with. I usually check KBB, MSN for values along with autotrader and then finally fleebay

I understand where people are coming from using book values to get an idea what a car is worth. I just don't see it as gospel, I priced my car lower than most of the 1994-98 GTs in the area. I think once you get to a car of this age you notice a big difference in condition. I don't mean to boast but my 97 is in better shape than 90% out there that should make it worth a couple hundred more that a typical car in the area
I agree with you but a lot of people looking for newer car will resort to one of the listed information sites. When I sell a car I detail the heck out of it and I list it on fleebay, craigslist and autotrader. I also start out high on price. Maybe wait a week and relist it at a higher price and word your add accordingly. Better than the rest, runs like new, adult driven, well taken care of, smoke free car, post lots of pictures. I would spend a few bucks more on a better example. On fleebay I list it for the leat amount I would take for it and have a buy it now price a few bucks more than I actually hope to get for it. The market is tough to say the least. I think you will find a buyer but it may take some time.
1996-98 cobra prices are crazy in my area, they are roughly double the price of an equal condition GT. People are asking over 10k for 4.6 cobras with over 100k on them. Low mile examples are the the low to mid teens! I personally would rather buy a 2005 GT for about the same price!
Here is one I haven't been able to figure out. What makes a 99 2 door GT coupe worth 13K?

That deal on the 99 is just a miscalculation on NADA's part. Or maybe they think the 35th anniversary year is something special. Who knows?
They list a 2000 at max $5875.

I picked my '98 GT for basically nothing since the stock motor had a hole in the block. Then I swapped in an '03 motor since the '96-98 motor only put out around 220 HP.
I finally sold it today for $4000, it killed me to let it go after 14 years of ownership. I really liked the car but after guying a 4th vehicle this past February it was too much to maintain all of them. I'm hoping to get a new daily driver in the next year and this money can go towards a down payment.
