Was looking into getting headers and a high flow cat X-Pipe. I saw the MagnaFlow "Shorty" X-Pipe which keeps your stock cats and o2 sensors, which they say is great for California Mustangs. I cant see getting much HP from that. If I did get the Hi-Flo Catalytic Converter X-Pipes would I have problems passing smog?

I have an 01, so I am sweating a bit when it comes time to smog. I have a Bassani Xpipe with cats, which trigger the check engine light. I would recommend that you do not do the off-road Xpipe and I believe you should be fine when it comes time to smog (I hope because I am in that situation) also, i do not believe that headers would prevent your stang passing a smog test. goood luck

If you go to the headers, make sure they're C.A.R.B. approved in Cal. otherwise you could fail the "visual" equipment inspection. As far as the high flow cats, you can change out if you have over 50000 miles on the car (legally), but you prolly should ask the manufacture if they are 50 state approved.

alright i'll have to make notes of that. I'm looking at all the major makers like basani, magna flow, hedman and MAC. I'm hoping those are all 50 state approved

Hi flows, you could prolly add Pacesetter (Arizona), believe they are 50 state. I just won't buy anything from anybody without specifically asking....too many people out there just doing the "selling" job and don't care about your application, IMO.

I'v been going back and fourth with the Mangnaflow customer service person through e-mail and he is saying the Magnaflow X-Pipe with cats is illegal in Cal. I told him I want the one with cats and the 50 state legal non off-road pipe. He e-mailed my back saying that it is still illegal.

I was thinking the non off road pipe. the Magnaflow X-Pipe with Cats. As seen on this page.

? that is not legal in California. It is for “OFF ROAD USE†ONLY. It is not legal to modify your converters in California.

It is not the Hi flow cats that are illegal it the fact that you are not allowed to tamper with the stock catalitic converter for 5 years or 50000 miles. I have had my 98 Cobra smoged twice since I installed the Bassani X Pipe with cats. It has passed no problems. The X-pipe has never caused a check engine light.

would it be a good idea to instead of paying $500 for the magnaflow x-pipe, pay the local exhaust shop that put my flowmasters on fabricate a custom x-pipe. has anyone done this? will i forfit the great sound and power by doing this?
