Off size Rim help - traction/handling

I've had this thought in my head for a year now......old school muscular "rake" look.

I already have Ford C Spring, and wanted to do 17s in the front and 18s in the rear. I was going to run 17X9s and 17X10.5s, but 17X10.5 tires are difficult to find. So I'm wanting to do 17X9s and 18X10s.

Any word on how it will affect handling, traction, and take off times?

The wider tires will help in all those areas, at least on dry ground. In the rain, handling and traction will suffer a bit (I hope youre not launching in the rain, lol). The wider tire provides more contact area with the road, providing more grip.

You wont be able to fit a 17x10.5" wheel under your front end.. it'll rub with the slightest side to side movement. You would have to run spacers to make them stick out pretty far and then you'd rub the lip on the wheel well. Stick with a 9" up front.

Nah, I guess I messed up. I was going to have 17X9(front) and 17X10.5(rear).

Now I want 17X9 front and 18X10 rear, I'm wondering how much that inch difference will make in handling etc.

A friend of mine suggested "if I have lower profile tires in the front relocate the battery to re-distribute weight."

Any thoughts?

well the size of the tire wont really make a difference with weight distrubtion I wouldnt think.. unless maybe you are going from like a 44" super swamper to 245/45/17 BFG KDW's.. that'd defintely be a change.

The main reason to move the battery is to get a bit of weight off the front end, but it is mainly noticeable for people who are hardcore drag racing or road racing and have down other weight reducing mods as well.

For a street car, i'd keep it up front and save the room in your trunk for other things.

About the widest tire you can go in the front is a 265/275 maybe. It will rub the plastic inner fender at full lock if you have a lowered car, but you should be going slow when it briefly rubs or your already in bigger trouble than a fenderwell clearance issue. The lower you go the less tire you can run. As for the rear you have to be careful as a taller tire(overall diameter) effectivly lowers your rear gear numerically, making the car SEEM like it has less power. A good place to compare tire size and fittments is here.http://http://www.1010tires.com/TireSizeCalculator.asp And I can recommend super service and price( I go through two to three sets of skins a year) The tech section is as good as you can find anywhere.

Just for comparison I have 265/35 18 front and 285/35 18 rear on 18x9 ft and 18x9.5 rear. I had Eibac wind me a set of springs that are more or less equivilant to a Ford "F" spring. It doesnt have a rake as such just looks like it.

315s will fit on both a 10 and 10.5inch wheel, 315 nittos (only nitto, other tire brands 315s are wider, like if ur going to put a bfg tire on a 9 inch rim use a 295) will fit on a 9 inch wheel but the contact patch wont sit flat.
