yesterday i installed an LED light bar under my dash and went to the local hardware store to get a toggle switch and i put it inside the center console storage bin. for the power i tapped into the aux powerpoint and and i put the switch on the negative lines. after getting done with all of that and putting the bin back into the console i read the back of the toggle switches box and it said to put the switch on the positive line. im not really sure why i put the switch on the negative line i guess i wasnt thinking. my question is whether i can just leave it alone or do i have to switch. is it a fire hazzard to have the switch on the negative? any help would be appriciated. thanks in advance.

The reason switches are in series with the power and not the ground, is a shock risk. If the switch is in series with the ground, the device still has +12V on it, and its looking a path to gnd. If you accidentally touch the (+) area, it will still have power there, and YOU will become the path to GND. Now, that being said, it probably won't kill you, but it only takes 100mA accross your heart to make it stop beating.

Its worth the extra time to redo it correctly IMO.
