k&n air filter
I just installed my new K&N filter on my 03 GT conv centennial edition.
I test drove it from a stop in several locations and it seems to have more pep.
Seems to run smoother too?
Question though. Will it encrease my mpg? I will let this forum know.
honestly, Its not proven to give any gains, or increase mpg. K&N makes a huge hype about their filters. The main reason to run one is the fact that its cleanable and you dont have to replace it with a new one.
Yeah, that's really the only reason to own one. Matter of fact, I just cleaned mine and reoiled it yesterday. Saved me about $10, and the sticker looks cool on my airbox.
I suppose with a cold-air induction kit and maybe some other stuff, it would wake up and give you an extra 2-3 hp.

I agree with these guys...
Is it worth the 45+ bucks? Not unless you plan to keep the car longer than a couple of years. Do the math - if you spend $50 on a K&N, you would need to keep the car long enough to have needed to change the $10 cone filter five times - then you break even. Once or twice more if you're messy with the cleaner and oil and have to buy refills.
It IS worth it if you've got engine mods, or a power adder (IMO). The increased airflow rate will let those mods work a little better.

Early results are in!I usually fill my car up every 4 to 5 days. That last fill up was in a six day time frame. My estimate was that I was getting 280 miles per tank @ 18.66 mpg combined. Last week from Sunday to Saturday I put about 350 miles on a tank @23.33 mpg.
I filled her up and jotted down the miles this time. So a more acurate mpg will be reported by next weekend.
I have a quarter tank left, and I filled up on Saturday! Heavy traffic on 495 due to a double accident on both sides of the beltway around 11am may skew the results a little, but I figure it will all even out anyway. B)
Tell me more about the tornado.

The math is in and the results are 299.45 miles on 13.29 gallons=22.53mpg
It would have been even better, except for:
1. Driving in a huge traffic jam the other day,
2. Driving very fast, @ 100mph on the way home tonight.
3. I would have filled up tomorrow but I wanted to know the results tonight.
Either way, I have a 20 percent increase in MPG!!! +3.87 mpg
I am a convert ; an extra 58 miles per tank which would explain the extra day. My round trip to work is 51 miles.

As stated before the reason you buy the K&N is because the are reusable and (for forced air) will allow for better breathing. The down side to a K&N is that they are oiled. That oil can be sucked upstream and coat the MAF and give erroneous readings.
The Pro-M doesn't need to be oiled therefore won't gunk up the MAF yet still provides improved flow over the stock unit. I don't know if they make one for stock parts or not? The Pro-M units run for the same price as the K&N (actually a little more for shipping).
That being said, some people never have MAF problems with a K&N, so YMMV.

I think people get in a hurry when cleaning and re-oiling the K&N. After cleaning, you HAVE to let the filter dry thoroughly before you oil it, and you HAVE to wait the recommended length of time before putting the filter back in the car. If you spray oil on over water, it will take that much longer for the oil to set.
I have never had MAF problems and I've been using the K&N for nearly 6 years on this car - 60,000 miles - cleaning it at least once each spring. Sometimes again in the fall.

new data supports my last report: Latest tankfull was 22.52mpg combined. Roughly 315 miles on 14 gallons.
Yes I did go fast a time or two, but I hit no real traffic this week since I work from 1pm till 9pm.
