I was at the local Ford dealer called Victory Ford LaGrange, Ga today and I was looking at a 04 SVT Cobra. I noticed on the end of the dealer invoice a new standard edition to the cost on the car. Called "GAS GUZZLER TAX" !!!! An extra $1000.00 added to the cost of the car. Is this real or just a dealer markup. Jeez!!!A salesman came up and said it was from the government. I said he was full of BS. He walked away. WTF ! Just thought I would mention it LOL

Yea its real. i think if the car uses up a certain amount of gas per mile they add the tax on. I think its 17 mpg in the city and they add the tax. im not sure about the numbers, but the tax does exist

dude i just bought a new mach and i didnt pay for anything. i practically raped the dealer rather than it doing me. i didnt pay dealer fee, destination.... i got it for 22.000 flat. i could feel the dealer cry when i left. i was a tough negotiator. plus i the finance and general manager are friends of mine. that kind of helped too. they didnt have the car they freighted it from north FL and i still didnt pay for that either. plus it helps that i work in the industry... so i know all BS dealer crap!!!

but the mach didnt have the gas guzzler tho... how weird. it didnt have it on the maroni or adendum sticker.

When did this happen?!
In 1978, Congress passed the "Gas-Guzzler" tax, whereby cars with gas mileage that was 5 miles or more per gallon below the government mandated standard, would fall into the category as gas-guzzlers. These gas-guzzlers were subject to a tax that still exists, which can today add as much as $7,700 to the price of the most inefficient sports cars and other similar vehicles.
However, special interest groups in the 1970s, especially the auto industry and those representing farmers loathe to pay this tax for their pickup trucks, created a loophole through extensive lobbying efforts. Light trucks could be built as large and inefficiently as automakers desired without fear of additional government taxation owing to this loophole. Further, because Congress has not redefined the attributes that constitute a light truck since 1978, most SUVs are still exempted from the gas-guzzler tax.

found that on the net

04 Cobras are different. They just made the cut. There should be no gas guzzler tax on an 04 Cobra. The 03s did have it though. The dealer is trying to pull a fast one. If its not on the original window sticker, then its a dealer mark up.

If you literally said he was full of BS, then I don't blame him for walking away. I'm not a car salesman, but I can bet the majority of them are normal people like you and I. Just like any normal person, I would want to be treated with some sort of common decency. I suggest you (and everyone else for that matter) get educated before you go car shopping. That way foot doesn't enter mouth so easily.

Decency? Heck I thought I was being decent LOL. You must love and trust those dealers. If you do then I have a nice bridge to sell you and I'll be nice as I'm taking you to the cleaners! I don't trust them, nor do I consider any dealer to deserve large amounts of decency when all they are out to do is to take as much as a persons money as they can get away with. It is crazy to think they are our friends. As far as I'm concerned thay are crooks. They lie, cheat, misguide, misrepresent, munipulate any way they can to get you to sign the dotted line. That's why all the car mags tell you to do your own research on any car you shop for. Awe! I hurt poor widdle dealer's feelwings. TOO BAD!!

OK....I forgot it was "hip" to jump on the "all car dealers are ********" bandwagon. My bad.

No.. like I said before... I'm not a car dealer, don't know one personally, nor love or trust them. But don't treat them like dirt simply because that's the "hip" thing to do. Just like anywhere else you shop, if you don't like the deal put forth to you, go somewhere else. Do you cuss out the cashier at <submit retailer here> because you don't like their prices? Nah.. you shop somewhere else.

Another thing.... I can guarantee you a dealership salesman's attitude is affected by the one presented by the potential buyer. If that buyer comes in with a crappy attitude toward the salesman, and it's sensed by the salesman, you can bet the buyer's odds of getting a good deal drop substantially.

I know. But I don't like some stranger telling me how I should act. He made me mad and I wanted him to know it. I'm 40 years old and I know my manners when I need to use them. When I need some help on my actions I'll ask. now I'm really a happy camper most of the time. Yes, I'm very ultra conservative and set in my ways. I apologize to him and anyone offend by my rant. No more :flame2:

Nobody likes to pay taxes but in this case I think it's justified, a lot of the oil is imported from such countries as saudi arabia who directly finance extremist organisations...

If this can push people into buying more fuel efficient cars and make america more self sufficient, then great ! Soldiers are dying every day over there, it's a small price to pay.
just my two cents...

Go to Ford's website, the Mach is rated higher in fuel economy that the GT (go figure?)

but more importantly if you live within 2 hours of eastern Va, your coming with me in 07 when I get a new stang! I will accept no refusal (in my best Dracula voice)
