Ok,

We all know the upside of owning a Mustang, or any other high performance car, however sometimes we forget the downside. I've never owned a Mustang, and I'm looking at several cars; included in those cars are the 2005 and the 03-04 Mach 1.

However.......no one owns a 05 yet and Mach 1's are very limited, so my question is for the V6, GT, and Mach 1 owners.....over the last couple years what problems has your Mustang presented, and how much were the repair bills? Simply put I'd like to know the car year, miles, problems, and cost.

I'd like a lot of replies, and honesty.....of course.

This will have a heavy influence in my decision.

2001 GT - 43,000 miles

IAC Valve failed at 25,000 miles, fixed under warranty, but they are cheap to replace, around $50 or so.

Other than that, nothing aside from the typical squeeks, rattles and twisted up seatbelts.

Probably anywhere from 75 to 100 1/4 mi. passes also.

I personally don't own my mustang yet, but my friend's '99 had two new engines, and tranny, ABS problems along with clutch issues. oil loss

My other friends 2001 .. nothing so far

2003 - Loosing oil from engine ... bags on it

another 99 ... loosing oil (black pipes) - babies it.

*shrug*

Man it sounds like with a Mustang......the whole thing is wrong or perfect. Kinda weird.

It also sounds like the 97 and 99 were terrible years for the Mustang repairs.

2001 GT = Burned window motor, fixed under warranty. And nothing else. 22,000 Miles.

The thing is some mustang fall into the hands of people who think thier mustang is indestructible. They beat and beat on it like theres no tommorow. Any car will have issues under these circumstances. If you get an auto get a tranny cooler. Cheep and effective way to get you tranny to last longer.

02 GT, 28,000 miles, no probs, except for the nagging seatbelt that occasionally won't retract.

I have a Bullitt 2001 40000Km. Beware of ignition problem.

They had to replace 4 COP (coil on plugs) so far. After looking other forum, there is a know problem with those parts.

2001 GT Auto: 42000 miles AOD
torque converter went out at 30k

Torque converter is acting up again at 42000

I'm actually picking my car up at the dealership later today for the repair.

BTW, both were covered under the warranty. Ford tech said that if it goes out again, they'll put a new tranny in for me.

If you buy a mustang, one tip, GET A MANUAL TRANNY!!!

This is my second mustang, 1st was a 95 6cyl, the torque converter in that baby went out as well, but it was at 75000 miles. It still drives at 130000, just shakes sometimes when gears are shifting.

Also, the head gasket and 2 heads were warped at ~35000 miles, repaired by ford under warranty.

i loved by 95 6 banger, did some crazy $hit!! BUT DON't by a 3.8L 6cyl!! horrible engine design!! :nono:

1996 4.6L 4v... 114,000 miles still going strong.. about to have to replace the water pump. Also had to replace plug wires, plugs, coil packs and IMRC controller all between 65-70k miles.. these arent an issue on any newer stang though.

Yea, somethings are to be expected .....on my Civic I replaced the water pump after 6 years, so that's not too bad.

what the heck do you do, manually upshift and downshift all the time, or keep the car in 2nd to keep the rpms up?

i find it hard to believe both of your stangs have had TC problems, especially 2 new ones in a row.

are black pipes the only sign of losing oil? or does your friend actually check the oil regularly and have to add?

2000 Mustang V6, 5-speed manual
currently 23,000 miles

1 problem recently when theft system was turned on, so I had to tow Mustang to Ford dealer, everything on the car was blocked. It was about $300.

I honestly don't do anything, to my new stang. i don't go to the track, the worse thing i probably do is occasionally floor the car because some idiot won't let me merge.

For my 95 6cyl, (which was my first car when i was 17), i sorta beat it up pretty bad; i had a pretty bad lead foot attached to me, so i wasn't really surprised that so many things went wrong. However, this new 2001 GT i have, i've babied (promised to do everything i can to prevent what happened to the first one), I even paid for the rip-off 30,000 mile Ford maintenance package. :bang:

Thats why i'm so surprised that its gone out twice on me. I spoke with the Ford tech and he said its very common on a Ford AOD for the TQ to go out. :notnice:

BTW, my sister had a 94 civic, she's had to replace the CV joint 3 times! also, a piston blew out of the side of the engine because she didnt know the head gasket was broken. Coolant was leaking into her motor and was rotting everything.
She purchased a 2001 accord special edition, the check engine light is already on, so much for Japanese Quality.

I've been lucky with engine problems, other than a radiator.

This is another Mustang question: From what material is the radiator made?

My Honda is a mixture of metal and plastic, and after 10 years in the Texas Sun it had a pinhole leak. The people at the shop said it was the plastic that cracked.

I was just wondering if a Mustang has more(or is all) metal, because my raditor will give me problems if I'm sitting in a fast food line for long periods of time....but once I'm on the highway....the tempature gauge goes back down. I know the reason for this, I just don't want to deal with it on an American car.
