So i bought my car on July 1st of 2004, after driving my sisters purple eclipse for six months, and yes i did say purple and no i dont were a skirt. My 99 Gt has been running great since i got her. From the day i took her off the lot, i've been planning on getting better exhaust and other minor bolt ons to up the performance. It wasnt long before my dreams of customizing my car were shut down by my father who told me i wasnt allowed. His reasoning being, "your exhaust you got on there is fine, until it breaks you dont need a new system, i can alread here you from a mile away."

Well even though i paid for the whole car and insurance, it was he who sighned for it thus he had control. Now here i am 18 for four months with a decent amount of money saved up, ive got my own debit card, and the ambition to get what i want. Everything seemed golden until that dreaded night coming home from work...unfortunatly i hit another car on the highway, and no it wasnt my fault. I dodged one accident only to cause another. Well i hit the guy doing about 12mph. No damage to his car at all, but somehow 800 dollars worth of cosmetic damage to mine.

So i settle all that without insurance and get my car back all shiny and beautiful. This is two weeks ago, and i finally come to with myself and decide i dont need to do anything to my car. Im going away to college next fall, i just dropped 800 on my front end, and i gotta pay for some of my school. So i decide to keep saving and make the best of my money.

Now here i am today. For the past couple of days, my car has sounded as though there was a hole in one of my mufflers. i try to get under my car and look but i couldnt see anything. I tooke to my local place to get my tires rotated and looked at it while it was on the lift; i had my brakes checked also. Well there was no hole in the muffler like i thought wuold be, rather the pipe leading from the end of the catalytic converters to the muffler was actually rusted off with a huge crack in it. It was at that point were i was just in complete shock. ON the way home i figured i could just get it welded back and hopefully it should be no problem. Some i feel as though God himself was playing a joke on me, but exactly as that thought ended and a minor sighn of releef came over me my car jumps and all of a sudden it sounds like im driving an 87 f150 monster truck. When i got home and stoped, the entire pipe cracked apart an was staying up from the hinges the muffler was on. Luckily it didnt drag at all.

Ironory it would seem has a way of finding me at all the worst times. As soon as i decide to not do anything to my car and just keep saving up, i need to fix my car....again. While my car was on the lift, i noticed that my entire exhaust system was completly rusted in a few areas. Well now i get to buy my catback and maybe a new x-pipe with some new catalytic converters as well (that remains to be determined). I think im going to go with the Steeda cat-back. If anyone has some suggestions, personal experience or what not advice would be appreciated.

Well there you have my depressing yet rewarding story. I apologize for the lenght, but i needed to vent. Oh and just as a tip for anyone with a 99 gt whose got around 50000 miles...check your exhaust for rust, i dont want anything like this to happen to anyone else.

LOL man what a way to get new exhaust. Personally I love the magnaflow stuff, but you are going to pay a pretty penny for it. You cant beat the sound of flowmasters on a stock h-pipe, but its going to be loud. check out http://www.mustangexhaust.com and listen to the sound clips there. Also their parent site is www.ninosport.com which you can purchase quite a few different exhaust setups from them and they are a sponsor of this site

how could a factory exhaust system rust out so quickly?

My cavalier has the original exhaust (stop laughing) and the car is 9 years old with 170,000 miles. This is through Canadian winters.

My suggestion if you want to go on the cheap, maybe saleen will have a stock exhaust system sitting on the shelf as a take-off for next to nothing.

Otherwise, I have heard borla exhaust and love the sound.

sorry i was late to post...but i've been working a lot. Anyways i got my new exhaust. I didnt go with the steeda kind because i couldnt wait for shipping and i havent heard too much about them. I went to my local P&A auto and looked into what they had. I did this so i wouldnt have to wait or pay for shipping. One guy suggested a dynomax system which i wasnt certain about. However my time was limited because i needed my car. So, i went back the next day(thursday last week) and was going to order them. However, the guy said they were out of stock. When i asked what else they had he told me all they could get me was the borla stinger cat back. When he told me the price, i said i couldnt do it. Luckily for me he decided to give me a break and knocked down the price a bit. So i ended up with the borla system. I put it on this past tuesday, and can say this...it kicks butt. Since then, i have loved every moment of driving...even more than before. My friend with a 96 Z28 caramo actually complimented me, and thats a lot coming from him.

As far as my exhaust rusting away...i dont know what to say. i bought the car july 1st 2004, and its a 99. The car was in perfect condition when i bought it but things might have happened before then. All i can say is that it was a good excuse to get an aftermarket system...which i love.
