Coming back

I finally got my command here in lovely Iceland to realize it's not smart trying to take a Mustang GT on a road trip from Idaho (it's current home while I'm away) to Virginia Beach Virginia in December. So, they are going to let me take two weeks off to get my car and road trip the first week of August instead. I'll be putting the car in storage in Virginia Beach for a few months until I arrive for good in December. I heard any more then four months it should be put on blocks due to flat spotting the tires. You think three months would be too long?

JeffreyDJ, it looks like I'm going to drive the northern route. Boise to Salt Lake City, Cheyenne Wyoming, Lincoln Nebraska, Des Moines Iowa, pretty much Highway 80 the whole way until I-76. I am thinking about dropping south somewhere and pulling into Bristol on the 6th or 7th for the Fun Ford Weekend and then to Virginia. Depends on how I do for time.

Oh, and thanks for the storage info mr-mstng, I feel better. I'll get an oil change and only leave a little bit of fuel in her before I go anyway. Now I just need to figure out what disk to take with me on a 2,500 mile road trip.

I already have the CD's ready. I make my own greatest hits CD's of my favorite bands. I'm keying on the loud (stay awake) music. No satellite radio.
Jeffrey, I can't believe you aren't going. I'm going to end up in Nashville or Knoxville on the 6th and then drive up to Bristol the morning of the 7th. Got the hotel reserved already. The guy I talked to said the hotels are getting full fast. Should be alot of fun even after the day is over.

I think your car will be fine for the 3 months in storage, but you may want to consider putting it on some jackstands & pulling the tires off. Just remember if you do jack it up, don't let the tires hang on the suspension - pull'em off. Not necessarily for the tires flattening out, but if they do lose air, it could be a pain in the **** if you come back and have to get under it to jack it up, pull the tire(s) off to go get air.
In addition, I would fill the tank completely full and add some STABIL to it. That'll keep your tank clean and being full, you won't have to worry about water/condensation building up on the walls of the tank during storage.
Next, throw a couple sheets over it (or car cover if you have one). When mine was in storage, there was a small section of the hood left exposed. When I went to pull it out, I couldn't believe how much "stuff" settled on it while in storage. You may also want to throw in a couple fabric softener sheets in your truck and floors.
Lastly, I would pull your battery. It'll probably need a charge anyway after 3 months. This way, you can have it fully charged right before you go to pick it up.
Have a good road trip.

MotorCity, thanks for the tips, very much appreciated. I have a portable pump and will invest in a new battery (it's due) when I arrive in December. I didn't think about the STABIL for the fuel. Good Stuff.

I'd definitely try to get the wheels off the ground to avoid flat spotting. If, for whatever reason, that's not practical, you could over-inflate them to reduce the effects of flat-spotting. Maybe 50psi or so. Just be sure to deflate them down to normal before you drive it.
