Clay bar or wax?
Its to prep the surface for polishing and waxing/sealing. It removes any contāinants in the paint that didnt come off during the wash. These are usually embedded in the paint and clay bars, when properly lubricated, slide across the paint pulling all these contaminants out. Leaving a nice fresh surface to start detailing. Waxes and sealants bond better to the smoother paint therefore lasting longer and further amplifying the shine
Clay Bar
You already had some good input.
I just picked up a used 2011 and the previous owner had a nice coat of wax on it. However, a great way to test is to grab a plastic baggie and put your hand into it. Then rub it over the surface. If you feel it dragging it could use a claying.
It is an extra step, however the end results are worth it.
Good luck,
Jim

Our older Mustang is black. Our new one is white. It wasn't until we had the white one that I realized just how much junk gets stuck in the paint / wax. I could actually see it now.
In the old days, my dad would used his fingernail to remove this kind of dirt. A claybar does a better job with less risk of paint / surface damage.

+1
Mothers has a nice kit, comes with detailer, a microfiber, and a nice clay bar. Good quality stuff and ive been using it for a couple years now. Im trying out the pinnacle clay bar to see what the difference is and honestly its overall the same.
There are a couple of new products that are out, like detail towels but they work like clay bars pulling out surface contaminants. Next time i order from autogeek ill pick one up and do a lil write up
