To Cat or not to Cat, that is the question
Hey all, i'm about to do some intake and exhaust work on my car. including the following:
bbk aircharger
edelbrock 70mm throttle body
magnaflows
bbk x pipe
my question is this, which do you all prefer, xpipe with cats or without? i'm concerned that it might be too loud without the cats. but its $200 more if i include cats. I love the rumble sound i hear from a lot of mustangs around town, but i can't tell if they removed the cats or not. what do you guys think?

i say go without, but also check your local emissions laws and also depends on how strict they enforce them
Thanks for the input guys
The emmisions are not what scares me. I live in an area that doesnt have regulations
I'm concerned that it'll be too loud and start to have a nasty sound to it. would anyone have a sound clip of a non-cat xpipe with magnaflows?

will have them mac on my wifes after the body work is done. already have on my 92. sounds great i think. deep and rich, no rattles or weird noses or hollow sound like some exhaust. aslong as you have a shop that will over look the not having cats dont get them. but add 100 bucks for the MIL eliminators so you dont have a check engine light. you should also go ahead and get one of the new upper intake elbows they are advertising. that along with the T/B should get you like 15Hp and Torque. and its only like another 200 bucks some are cheaper. just my .02$
they actually have an emissions test in NC??? that stinks. guess im liking VA more and more. though i dont legally have them on there. i didnt realize there werent any cats when i bought it. the car was from california. so it failed my first attempt at inspection!
Hey thanks guys, i was hoping you would all suggest no cats (saves $200
). but i will get the mil eliminators to prevent the check engine light.
Hey Conv_stang, are you talking about the intake plenum? where the TB hooks up to? i was looking into that and wasnt actually sure how effective they were, not to mention it would be another 200$!!. but i'll take your advice and look into them. 15hp and 15tq is always welcome!!
thanks all for the replies. oh and by the way, i live in pasco county, florida, not exactly very developed, probably why we can get away without emissions checks.

I just put a non cat Bassani x-pipe with a flowmaster catback on my 2000 GT. I'm really not happy right now. I'm getting a beutiful tone, but a load metal sounding rapping noise during hard acceleration and engine braking. I would love to know if it is because of the x-pipe or if it is something else going on with the system. The exhaust is not hitting a thing and everything is tight, so If it is because of the off-road X-pipe i have, I would most definately get the one with cats. You can feel free to call me on my cell phone and I will let you hear it over the phone. Just e-mail me and I'll give you the number racesloan@hotmail.com
I'm going to start this thread up again, at least I searched for a change. I am looking at either Bassani or BBK x-pipes with cats for my 97GT. Since I live in Virginia and they do have the inspections I figure it isn't worth the hassle. Can you tell me your opinions or any problems you've had. I have the Flowmaster Force II catbacks so do you think I'll feel the difference? I know the car will sound better.
I personally do not like the BBK X-pipes. Theirs isnt a true X in the fact that it looks more like a modified H-pipe. I would much rather go with a Bassani or Magnaflow X-pipe if you are dead set on one.
It looks like an H with curves to look like an X. I thought you had an H-pipe on your cobra? I got a hold of Amp Performance in Arizona. They have the Bassani x-pipe in Aluminum for $379 or in Stainless for $472. I can't find a part # or price for the Magnaflow.
That's what I keep hearing. Here you go Scott.......
After shopping around this is the best I've got.
Stainless Steel Magnaflow X-pipe w/cats $531.33 w/ free shipping
Stainless Steel Bassani X-pipe w/cats $498.5 w/ free shipping
Aluminum Bassani X-pipe w/cats $360.05 w/ free shipping
Being around the ocean for the next couple of years at least I'm thinking Stainless.

yeah stainless is the way to go in your case.
I do have a MAC O/r H-pipe, but i've seen just about all pipes out there in person. My favorite above all is the Dr. Gas but its o/r unless you get cats for it.
