04 cobra Tranny Swap
04 cobra Tranny Swap
I know I will get flamed for this question but here goes.
I have 2 cobras. 01 no mods for a daily driver and an 04 cobra I plan on track only with light duty on the street.
In the 04 I want to swap the 6 speed with with the 4r100 automatic with a slap shift. I hear that is perfect for 1/4 and 1/2 mile straight away. But scar handling that power on the street. I mainly want the swap to cut out the shift time and keep the revs high thru the shift.
Would the $1700 - $2000 swap be worth a 1 - 1.5 sec at the track?

Swap the 04 IRS and transmission into your 01, then swap the 01 IRS and transmission for a 99-04 GT SRA and 4R70/75 auto...keep the good stuff for your DD. You'll get better mpg with the 6spd anyways, and the 3.55s and beefier components on the 04 IRS will last longer.
Asking every GT owner if they want to do a swap and I would pay the labor for the removal of theirs. Only bad thing is the only Stang and GT owners around here are girls and older people who bought their car just for looks only. I need to expand out to a bigger city like Tulsa or Oklahoma City. Where I live is a tiny lake town that lives of tourism during the summer. Population 1000.
I like to drive freely and zany around turns and all. But we have dirt tracks and drag strips here. So it be best for me to build my ride for the strip. I will miss the sporty feel of the manual shift but gain sec off my 1/4 time. If I am going to do it, I might as well commit to the strip.
Don't swap that IRS out just yet though. I think you will enjoy the auto in it but see how she does with the IRS first. The auto trans shouldn't be as hard on the IRS as dumping a clutch. Even with an aggressive stall. Just depends how the IRS will act on slicks when launching. If she tracks straight, keep the IRS so the car still handles on the street. Too bad aftermarket paddle shift system is still not a realistic option. That would be a blast.
Seen a video on youtube and the guy had a slap shift. So that got me researching it and seen that this set up would be more practical for me. No street courses or half way decent roads around here. But we have a lot of dirt tracks, strips, and lap tracks. I am not so much into driving circles but rather just go fast and straight. Just seems this be the best for my application. Have to say it looks like it be fun slap shifting down a track with no to low shift lag.
