I've been struggling trying to figure out the problem with my wifes 01.
When you crank it up, it will rev high to like 2,000rpm and hold there for a few minutes, then will slow down to like 1500 or so. The car more often than not idles high all the time anywhere from 1100 to 1500. When you have it in gear, you can tell it is still wanting to idle high as it puts alot of pressure on the tranny and brakes.
When you put it in gear you can feel the car jerk hard as the tranny kicks in.
I've replaced the fuel filter, cleaned the IAC, replaced the FPE sensor before this started, air filter is good, no CEL. Im out of ideas.

I'm not sure about the autos, but the 5 speeds have a rpm hangup where you'll idle high (around 2k RPMs) after pushing in the clutch. Ford programs these this way for emissions purposes and I think to help out people who don't rev match or double clutch on downshift. To stop the high idle you can get a custom burned chip and tell them you want no RPM hang up, or there's the IAC restrictor plate method. I was looking into making a restrictor plate for mine when I get some spare time at the shop. I'm getting sick of coasting to a red light at 2k RPMs.

I really dont think Ford would have done this in an automatic. ALso it doesnt do it everytime, i'd say about 75%. The reason I would think its incorrect on an auto is it puts an extreme amount of stress on the tranny, as the high idle creates the tranny to try and pull harder even when stopped. Also it is causing excessive wear on the brakes.
Its so bad sometimes, that i've coasted down hills and it pushed the car fast enough over the speed limit, that i've acctually gotten pulled over. I explained to the trooper and showed him how the car was idling and he agreed, that it shouldnt be doing that.

It's possible the IAC is bad. You could always find a friend with a 99+ V6 and swap the IAC's out right quick just to see. There's also the possibility of the throttle position sensor gone bad, not sure if that could affect it. Maybe the throttle is hanging open a little. Something's letting too much air in there for sure, and it's got to be metered air or it would stall out. I guess the only other thing it could possibly be is the computer out of whack. Maybe a computer reset is in order. You said you changed the FPE sensor, is that the sensor for the EGR valve? Anyways, that my 2 cents. I'm curious now, lemme know if anything turns up.

No updates really. I have started putting mid-grade in the car as it sounded like it hada bit of valve rattle. The car is acctually running a bit smoother. I still think its an exhaust leak, but i dont have the time lately to check it out.

My car is back to normal. I disconnected the mass air meter then disconnected the battery cleaned up the connection to the batter (it had some kind of gunk on it, i think my dad drop some grease on it some how). anyway i checked all other connections played around with the throttle body, made sure the intake was nice and tight---reconnected the mass air meter then the battery, it has been running smooth for three days...... im not sure if this will hep any but you may just want to disconnect and connect some stuff to make sure everything is plugged in ok

I traded it in yesterday. I did notice it ran a bit rougher when i put regular in it again. I am guessing there was a bit of valve rattle that was happening. who knows, oh well.

I know this was a LONG time ago...but any ideas cuz my 2000 V6 Auto does the same thing...although it idled high for as long as I can remember...seemed like it got worse when I removed the intake silencer...also...been having cold start probs...clogged injectors/fuel lines maybe?
