V8 Tone for V6 Mustangs
#1
i've heard that you can make a V6 mustang sound like a V8 with some aftermarket products. i think there was a Flowmaster one that had a kit developed specifically for that idea. my question is, how close to a V8 sound is this? are they just talking out of their butts or what?

I've heard that it's pretty difficult to make a 6 sound like an 8. Something to do with the differing frequency or harmonics or something like that of a 6 cylinder and an 8 cylinder. That it is easier to make a 4 cylinder sound like an 8. Was something like a 4 can be made to sound like an 8, 12, 16, etc. and a 6 can be made to sound like a 12, 18, etc.

no replacement for displacement, your not gonna get the sound of a v8 out of a 4.0 or 3.8 as hard as you try but you can come close with the right selection of mufflers. A cam also will drasticially change the exhaust note.

No matter what muffler, tubing, cat, or header configuration you have, a V6 will never sound like a GT (V8). The GT has two more cylinders and has an odd style firing order that gives it its exhaust note. An odd firing engine will fire two cylinders on the same bank (A bank is one side of the engine) in succession. The V6 has an even style firing order. An even firing engine will fire one cylinder on one bank then another cylinder on the opposite bank.

Wow... is it just me, or do those MAC cat backs sound almost ricey? A hint of a whine also. I almost bought some MAC cat-backs (y-pipe) for my V6...but after hearing this... I'm having second thoughts. Do any cat-back systems sound better than this?

Yeah, Dayton is about 3 - 3 1/2 from Cleveland. Not an enjoyable trip since there is a big bunch of nothing in between - except Toledo or Columbus depending which way you travel.

Oh Man!!! My buddies from college came from a small town north of Dayton, every now and then I'll join them back at their hometown and the smell of manure is just overpowering. Thank God there are some areas that are somewhat developed to escape to.

its virtually impossible to have a v6 sound like a v8 but there are several systems out there that make it close.
Flowmaster True Duals with 40series mufflers sound very nice and have a deep tone.
All bassani exhaust is known for a nice exotic tone
http://3.8mustang.com/multimedia/ has a bunch of sound clips which you can check out
