I'd like to know as well. I'm currently deciding whether to replace the whole axle or just the gears.

They arent that strong. Id say over 300 hp is pushing its limits. That being said, theres guys out there running them with alot more power then that. I dont know how hard they beat on it or what but they exist. IMO its worth doing the upgrade to an 8.8 instead of doing gears and posi in the 7.5

Ive been through one 7.5 already and I have a stock motor. However, I beat the crap out of my car.

Just to be curious what changes must be made doing the swap? Such as a driveshaft? What do you need to change?

The 7.5 can live but it's threshold is low like stated since people have blown them with stock hp. gears are limited and really any money put into a 7.5 could be spent on an 8.8. keep in mind when shopping for an 8.8 the years since rearend widths are different. try and stay within your years and you wil be fine example 94-04 and 94 -98. if you used a 94-98 rear it is shorter so spacers would be needed and teh lower control arm bolt holes are smaller in dia. than the 94 and up 8.8s.

Yeah, but that's how it goes. Most people won't ever need to upgrade the rear end, so there's no point in ford going all out on it.

I feel your frustration though... I'm also currently contemplating a rear end swap. Just gears would be so much cheaper...
