Squeal AND Wobble
Squeal AND Wobble
OK, so I got bit by the American Muscle bug and decided to switch from an old mercedes to a 2004 V6 3.9 for a daily commuter. The problem I've encountered seems like it may be common but it's hard to find one just like mine through past posts..here it is:
So while i'm driving at pretty much any speed, be it a slow crawl through a fast food drive-through or on the freeway, there is a constant squeaky/chirpy noise coming from the driver side (i can't pinpoint if its rear or front wheel, but it sounds like the rear). This is a used car that i just bought with about 96K miles. I made sure to have a mechanic looks at it before I bought it and they did say that the front brakes and disc need to be replaced, however like i said, It seems the sound may be from the rear...
SECONDLY...(and this is the part I don't see in other posts)...
The car also wobbles/vibrates more and more as i increase speed. I tried going over 60mph and definitely didn't feel safe. I'm talking shaking thats pretty strong....i was making a lane switch on the freeway at about 55mph and still have the habit of glancing over my shoulder to see my blindspot before i move over, and i was surprised by how much the passanger seat was shaking when i put my right hand on it.
Does this simply sound like a brake/disc that need replacing or could it be a larger issue? I'm a bit newer to Mustangs (this is my first) however I'm trying to use this car as an opportunity to finally figure out the basics of car parts and common problems.
If I can' i'll try to grab audio/video of the problem.

The shaking could be the tires. I have an 04 3.8L. I used to have that shake put new tires on and it went away. The squeak sounds like brakes possibly. My brakes still squeak sometimes and tgey are all new but i think i have a rf caliper that sticks a little bit, also check your back pads I had one missing one time that made some nice squeaking/grinding noises lol
The first thing I was thinking before I finished reading our post was brakes. The calipers tend to get rusted up and don't slide back and fourth as well as they use too. So your brakes are always applied a bit more than they should be. As stated above check your brakes and calipers. Its about the right age for the calipers to be rusted. Try putting the front tire on the rear and the rears on the front and see if the vibration goes away. Out of balance tire will cause what your talking about. Hopefully you don't have lose lug nuts.
Also be sure to check your ball joints just to be safe. I had issues with mine and actually had one break in a parking lot on me once at like 80k miles, mine is also prior salvage so that always couldve been why but it never hurts to check
Thanks everyone, i really appreciate the feedback, I'm going to get the brakes and rotors/calipers checked this weekend, and will tell them to check the ball joints as well...I'll send an update if that does the trick.
