Question 1999 v6 turbo????

Im new here so plz bear with me a bit. i got a 1999 3.8 5 spd. Im more of a body guy than major mechanic.... i am though thinking of putting a turbo on or even maybe a twin turbo set up...? ik its a lot to ask but any suggestions on what i will need and how to go about it will be greatly appreciated.

First im assuming i will need much done before i get the turbos....what all am i looking at? and second...what is my sixer capable of? can it handle a turbo or twin turbos?

thanks again for info and suggestions.

Lots to do in my opinion before ya start throwing the thoughts of turbo. Stock clutch has to be changed out. It is not rated for much HP. Put in a posi locker or LSD can't have the 1 tire fry. 3.73 gear best in a manual V6 in my opinion. Alt like 4.10 gears personal preference. I get those knocked out just to handle the add HP your going to be adding.

If you keep the boost low, say 6-8psi the motor will be fine. As far as other upgrades......

Clutch
8.8 rear (loose the 7.5 its garbage)
Svt focus fuel pump
Injectors (if they don't already come with the kit you get)

There's probably more but that's IMO is a good basic list.

Thank u both for the much needed info... ik there is much to do befor geting the turbo and i am looking forward to the work. im not looking to go crazy big so the 6-8 psi is probly going to be good. not only am i looking for just the extra power but mainly to make the car have more rarity.

next question... i have heard good and bad about ebay turbo kits.... what is your thoughts????

i might also stick with the stock rear end for now what is your thoughts about a t-lock...? they worth it or just go with the 8.8?

I don't know anything about the ebay kits, do they have a brand name?

As for the rear, you can find a used 8.8 for what it would be to get a t-lock and you get a stronger rear end.

Idk how are they going to say it fits the whole 94-00 models with the 94&95 being two totally different engines compared to the others. It's just seems sketchy to me then again I don't know anything about turbo kits or if they can be forwards almost any engine like that

I feel like there are better kits out there. One, it seems cheap for a TT setup and not to mention you have to make both the turbo manifolds and downpipes, which if you cant fabricate would be money.

In reality, you should plan upwards of 5k for a reliable turbo/TT setup.

Well, as with anything, you get what you pay for, and personally, I would have a hard time trusting a turbo kit that costs the same as intake/axleback/tune.

I'm not trying to be in any way rude or anything like that, but here's what I would do if I were in your shoes, I'd save some cash in a shoebox and DD your sixxer for awhile, have fun with it and leave it mostly stock, and then when you've got some money put away, I'd sell the sixxer and buy a GT. That's going to give you an instant boost in power, and a more capable suspension/transmission, rear end etc etc etc if you want to go forced induction down the road.

There's nothing wrong with a V6 mustang, and I know there are some nasty FI V6's out there that are very very fast, but those cars have thousands or even tens of thousands of dollars worth of custom work put into them, and a $900 turbo 'kit' isn't going to be anything like what I think you're probably expecting it to be. Even assuming that the turbos themselves are of good quality, you still need to get a totally custom exhaust made, and figure out how all that "universal" piping (note, there is no such thing) is going to work in your car and get it all custom tuned and so on.

It's not worth it! Sell your 6 and buy a gt. Except if you are willing to push alot of money on your six.

Im pretty sure hes not asking if its worth it or not. Hes asking what it will take. Sure a GT has more potential, but that doesnt make the V6 a bad motor.

I personally cant stand when people ask for advise on a V6 and all they get is sell it and buy a GT. Some people want to mod a V6 and theres nothing wrong with it.

I am a proud sixxer. I like to mod the v6. Just as fun to drive as the v8. Not a lot of opportunity to use the full potential of the v8 out side of the track. The v6 give all the enjoyment a v8 can around town and on the highway.

I apologize if I offended any sixer owners out there, it really wasn't my intention. Like I tried to say in my post, there's nothing wrong with a V6 mustang, and they CAN be made fast. I simply don't think that in regards to the OP's questions a $900 ebay twin turbo kit is the right way to go about it, and suggested buying a GT as a more reliable/less sketchy way to achieve the power gains he wants.

They have the headers and everything else fitted to the years so they bolt on, no welding or having to jerry-rigging. And their around $1400-$2000 full kit

Ain't no thing. I just get annoyed when that's all anybody ever says. Mostly on other forums however.

We call that "little man syndrome" around here.

Do you have one? Or does the person you 'heard' that from have one?
