Where to start.... stock 5.0?
Where to start.... stock 5.0?
I've got an 84 20th anniversary GT. Its a 5.0 5 speed. The flat tappet engine not the roller. Honestly the car just doens't have quite the umph I think it should. The car only has 81k miles. Its got a new 600 holley, true duals with a newer fox flowmaster axle back other than that shes stock other than some 17inch cobras. I need a clutch for one but other than that what would give me the most power. I'd like to at least run as good as a 05-up GT if possible. Where should I start?
yes it would.u can probably score a whole rear end in in a salvage yard.it may be even better to build a new motor.a HO stroker motor or a 351 build.

For starters on cheaper side ditch the lame stock intake, here is my opinion.
Edlelbrock performer or Weiand stealth
bump base timing to 12*
A set of headers and a good flowing dual exhaust ( you will need a double hump cross member)
3.55 or 3.73 gears, the 7.5 rear will live on the street. It isn't the best but it doesn't like high rpm take offs and slicks, other than that it should be okay.
this will wake it up right here. you don't have much big valve room or even too much room increased lift with the stock pistons. That said the stock cam isn't very bad in the '84 and if you want to keep this motor another cheap option is a set of ported E7 heads with he above intake will open isa good combo for your motor.
To open your options up even more you can just do the intake swap and gear option like I stated and run that for awhile and then hunt the bone yards for a '87-'92 roller H.O. motor. now you have more head/cam options convert it to carb drop it in and go. even better would be a explorer Gt40 motor. then swap in the 8.8 if you really wanted.
Also I would invite you to look at our TECH section. good info in there.
