I just got an 86' GT the guy told me it had a three speed auto. He's only owned it for a year most of which it sat in storage so he doesn't really know. I assumed it was probably a C4 that a previous owner swaped in because I thought all 86's came with either the T-5 or the AOD. I got my friend to take a look he said he didn't think it was a C4. So how do you tell what transmission you have? I'm wondering if it's an AOD that lost overdrive or something else?

Okay so maybe I've answered my own question. I believe it is an AOD. There was a little confusion because 1) the car would slip out of gear when it was in 3rd and 2) the shift pattern on the shifter says 1-2-D instead of 1-D-OD like I thought AOD's did.

I found out what at least part of the problem is. Someone previously broke the TV cable to throttle body linkage, and instead of replacing it loosely wired it in place. I tightend it up and I now have overdrive, although if I mash the gas in OD it slips out so that needs to be replaced. Does anyone have a picture of what it should look like? I'll post one later of the rigged up job on mine so you can see what I'm talking about.

In addition the tranny fluid is too full. Can this cause shifting problems? If so I'll need to drain some.

Having too much fluid isnt good but it will still shift... just not properly ( I believe)
