hi all
ive always wanted to get a mustang (89-92 hatchback) and right now im 18 and graduating high school this year. ive been saving my money and talking to my dad who knows alot about cars and he doesnt think i should get a 5.0, he thinks a V6 is what i should get. i want a 5.0 cuz well its a 5.0... and thats what i like.
i guess the real question here isnt about which one to get, but instead how to get it.
i could buy a running mustang and hope that it isnt going to die on me and fix it as it probably will break...
or i could buy a junk one and rebuild it

can someone give me an estimate of how much it would cost to buy a body and build a car and how long it might take?
also what are the chances if i buy one off of someone that it will be in really good condition?

If dad wants you too get a V6 fox your gonna have to get between 79-86...

personally i wouldnt get a V6 (finding even a tranny from local wreaker can be troublesome)
if this is your first car,i might consider getting 87-93 V4 unless you can find a nice 5.0 thats not been pretty well used...

hey welcome. very few v6 foxes were made. most were 2.3 4 cylinders. having a V8 is nice. but you have to remeber insurance costs for the V8. also its easier to get tickets with the V8. so i can understand your dads point of view. alot of people start of with a 4 and then move upto a V8 later. just talk to your dad and tell him how you feel. and see what he says. but if hes willing to get you a 99+ v6 id be willing to take it. b/c they are almost just as quick and get better gas mileage. but good luck on your quest. and let us know how it goes

I have a 88 GT Hatch for sale. Check it out. Its kind of right on the middle of what you want. I dumped alot of money into it but I just cant finish it. I got in too much over my head. Im 18 too so I understand the insurance problems and all of that other stuff. Its hard to keep up with everything. But check it out... you migh tbe interested.

Not going to comment on the almost as quick part ...

As far as gas mileage goes I'm going to have to disagree ...

my 03 GT gets 24-26 mpg

And my 88 5.0 gets 23-25 mpg

Now if you hammer it all the time sure they'll stink the tank dry, but as long as you drive reasonably you'll be looking at mid 20's per gallon

As a comparison my 4.0L v6 Ranger got 18-20 mpg ... so the mpg difference is not really what you'd assume.

My uncle got 16mpg with the cruise at 77 and stomping on it alot with his blown 5.4 F-150, so gas mileage in a V8 mustang is definitly gonna be around 18-20 when driving hard.
