Top End Engine Suggestions

What's up all?
Got me a 93 LX 5.0 basically stock motor w/ 65k miles on her. I was looking to grab some more ponies via Intake/Cam... Any suggestions...? gonna keep stock heads, was thinkin of a BBK SSI high rise intake, with a 303 cam B, E? Dunno... what's the best intake/cam combo for stock heads? Also prob should change the lifters while I'm in there.... so, basically I'm wondering what I should do as far as upper/lower intakes, cam, lifters, and if I do all that do i need bigger than stock injectors? Thanks guys!!

IMHO stay far away from the SSI intake more trouble than it is worth, has fuel leak issues ( google it some threads will pop up) and on the dyno charts it didn't real pull any #'s better than the other intakes on the market that are for more reliable.

really the only way to keep the stock 19lbs injectors are with just an intake swap or adding ported E7s /thumpers after that minimum would be 24s for most head swaps so you would be good.

I would search ebay or classifieds and either find a real '93 cobra or an early explorer GT40 intake ( I also have a write up on GT40 intakes in tech) The edelbrock typhoon, trickflow street heat and holley systemax are all great intakes. next get a 65mm TB and a new MAF ( 73mm ). I'm running an E cam but even a stage 1 would work ( at this point though you are real close to taking of the heads keep that in mind) you will gain a little bump in idle lope but the hp gains aren't going to big with the stock bottle neck heads. you could just go with 1.7rr and sneak 10hp out that way and keep the stock cam, its up to you but either way you are going to need better valve springs( don't replace the cam and leave the stock springs in) and I would go with 1.6rr to replace the stampers.

On a budget the sure fire bang for the buck combo for a fox w/o a doubt.....Gears, Gt40 intake, GT40P heads, stage 1 cam and supporting mods. done.

Like skunk said....I bought the typhoon upper and lower intake for my set up....quality was pretty good and port size was decent. Thought I would have to take out the port and polish kit to at least gasket match the ports but was surprised I didn't have to

Thanx guys... Yeah i've heard several issues of fuel leak issues w the BBK SSI intkake. I'll put it simply... Lookin to grab a decent amount of ponies from an intake/cam upgrade with stock heads.... or am I better off starting with head upgrades? either way what's recommended.? (running 3.73 gears now) I've heard everything from E303 B303 stock CAM, etc I'm a bit new to the mustang but any info is experience in my book, thanks for the advice... Again just lookin to do a cam/lifter and or upper and lower intake for more ponies... possibly injectors... I've got a 65mm BBK throttle body now.. on a stock intake and stock intakes.... any further recomendations is greatly appreciated... Thanks again fellahs!!!

I'm all for upgrading the heads - if you're going to change the cam, may as well have heads that can take advantage of it. The weight reduction from going with aluminum heads is like adding a little more hp too. Keep checking online and local vendors, flEaBay, CL, and other classified ads for the parts you want to replace - there are deals to be had out there. Chris' (skunk21's) recommendations concerning parts is spot-on if you're on a budget. Good luck with your new pony.

Absolutely do the heads... no matter what else you do, your power output will be restricted by the stock heads.
The "GT40" heads are a very good design, but not too common to locate. A good machine shop can work them into a very strong flowing set-up. Common aftermarket headers bolt right up, with no limitations.
The "GT40P" head is also a great upgrade, much cheaper to obtain and easily found in junk yards. Again they take great to porting and will bolt right on. You will be restricted to 2 or 3 types of exhaust header that you can use, due to the spark plug angle. Do a lot of reading/research before deciding.
The best bang for your dollars is using a set of aluminum heads, (Trick-Flow seems most popular), but cost jumps up rapidly in that regard.
24pound injectors at a minimum, but you must ask yourself, What are my HP goals? 300RWHP (real easy numbers, real nice street driver) or into the 400hp range?
If you think you may add forced induction (turbo or supercharger) that should be taken into account before any other parts are purchased. Another good site to review is "Corral.net". Seem to be a lot of foxbody specific info. Good luck!

I have a nice write up on the Gt40 & "P" heads in tech and also the explorer intake. I totally agree to go after the heads or if you don't have the cash do the intake, TB and maf too grab a few ponies but I tell people don't expect all that much. A "P" headed motor while it wont get to teh 300rwhp mark it gets close and good aluminum headed motor will. wedges, AFRs and brodix are good 5.0. heads, I don't like patriot ( very poor casting). 400+rwhp will not happen w/o boost most N/A 347s are mid/upper mid 300's. I got my best friends ported and polished Tom moss ported E7s for free so I went that route when my gasket started to go, they flow right around gt40 range probally at that point I could have gone another route but there are couple of decent thumper foxes in my area and my does decent. I know lots of guys who want to do a cam swap just for lopey idle and stop short. sadly they are really missing out and most everyone knows it. stang.net and corral and good site but we are picking it up here also .

a decent all one kit also is the trick flow top end kit, nice matched kit that has decent numbers on the net. nice kit, I helped a buddy install one a few years back. there are tricks to run different headers with "P" heads but yes you are limited but to what really the ford racing headers are very nice well built headers and long tubes can be had.
