is there a such thing as 180 out to where i have to rotate eng over to tdc again??

Pull number one plug. Put your finger over the hole and have someone bump the starter over until you feel pressure pushing on your finger. Look for the timing mark on the harmonic balancer rotate the engine by hand with the key off until that mark is lined up with the zero.

you can line up the zero and still be 180 out if your not on the compression stroke. You have to be on compression stroke in order to drop your distributor in the right spot.

^^ spot on. get her up on the compression stroke just like Glenn stated ( you will know it). there should be timing marks they are probally just hard to see. once you get it upn compression on #1 the marks will become visable ( good time to make a paint mark tdc). drop in your dizzy and the pointer should drop in towards #1. get the motor up to operating temp and then set your timing. If by chance you got your self 180* out ( basically on the exhaust stroke) just restab the dizzy. you should be all set though.

Trust youself. take your time and think it through. If you go by the compression stroke just bring it around again, do it until you feel you got it you aren't going to harm anything. we are here for any help we can provide.
