Unhappy shifter problems on automatic

hey all

I've had problems with the shifter handle on my automatic transmission in my 1984 mustang.

the button always locks up and doesn't move in or out as it should. I've had to remove the handle completely and drive it by using my fingers to move the metal **** to the right to shift. I've attempted to fix the problem by getting a new t-handle and button, and with these, the handle moves up and down as you push the button and doesn't stay fixed in one spot. I am sure this is because the new button has a slope on it and the old button didn't but had a hole straight through

I've included some pics to see if anyone notices anything unusual...

thanks in advance

Looks like a fairly obvious difference between the two buttons. Have you checked the salvage yards for shifter that looks more like yours? By the way which was the original? the black or shiny? (sorry not sure what the 84's had on them, but i know my 88 has a silver button)

the silver shiny button was the original but it's currently broken. =S

the handle comes off pretty simply...stick it into neutral and pull the handle up and off...probably needs some encouragment though =P

Ok- so where did you get the black button handle from? It just really doesnt look the silver one- the placement of the notched out area is more towards one side versus where it is on the other. Could you return the 'new' one and get the correct one? Or like I recommend check with the local junkyard, the other fox owners, or even ebay to see if you can get the correct one.

I got the black button from latemodel restoration supply...
http://www.latemodelrestoration.com/...0%201&comp=LRS

the pic they have is from the side and you can't really tell it doesn't have the hole down the center... so that didn't work out...
next stop ebay...
