Get good machine work, buy quality pistons/rings and run a roller cam (be it hydraulic or solid) those three things will contribute greatly to a long lived good performing motor.
The roller cam mainly because new oil formulations are really hell on a flat tappet cam if you aren't careful.

What model year and vehicle did the engine come from? The factory roller cam HO 302s from '87-early '91 Mustangs are a good base to start from. They had forged pistons and the '87-'88 HO 302 in particular had a cam with a more aggressive ramp rate. If you can swing it, find a decent set of aluminum heads for the future - reduce weight and gain power = win/win.
