Icm module

I have a 88 mustang gt, every place I’ve went to, and bought a icm module my car runs like crap, the last place was rock auto, they sent me a motorcraft icm, didn’t work, the only one the works is if I buy a used one on eBay # E6SF-12A297-A1A module. All the new ones have different #s even motorcraft and they don’t work, does any one have an idea why nothing works but the old motorcraft one.

Hm. Including your other thread link here because important info, in case others wanna chime in: https://themustangsource.com/forums/...module-547786/

According to a couple of Ford Parts Dealer websites, powered by Ford and all that, your module listed in the the other thread, the DU2Z-12A297AA... doesn't exist. However, the DU2Z-12A297A (single A) does, and it's the correct called for ICM for your car... or is it? I've also see where that double A part number is actually on the part, so I don't know what's going on with that. Ford doesn't even list the other part number, the E6SF-12A297-A1A. But Google does... and then when I backed up the text to E6SF-12A297-A... two part numbers show up. E6SF-12A297-A1A and E6SF-12A297-A2A. Hm.

Dug some more... ah. There we go. So there's an actual difference between manual and automatic transmission ICMs. Jegs and Holley Accel both show different part numbers if you have a manual versus an automatic.
Jegs Manual:
https://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS/555/40606/10002/-1
Jegs Automatic: https://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS/555/40605/10002/-1
Notice how the E6SF-12A297-AxA parts are listed under the Manual transmission one, whereas another part number, E3SF-12A297-AxA (notice the '3'?) is listed under the automatic.

For grins did the same look up for Accel. Lookie there. Same deal:
Accel Manual: https://www.holley.com/products/igni...ts/parts/35369
Accel Automatic: https://www.holley.com/products/igni...ts/parts/35368

So it appears the reason the other Motorcraft one is 'correct', but doesn't work, is that it's probably not correct for your car being the one you need is the manual transmission one, given the part number you got to work. Possibly. The information out there is *really* scattered about, and I'm just doing a little bit of legwork on it. But it does stand to reason that this is the problem...? But seems that's the most likely answer, given what wound up working and not.

Assuming there's not other mods or such on that car. All this is assuming the car is completely stock and nothing else could be the problem. And of course, wiring, computer, distributor, etc, ad nauseam, could also be a factor, but again, given your description the likely answer is you got the wrong transmission version of the module.

Dunno if that helps, but there ya go. 'Bout all I could find on it. Welcome to the forums!

Thank you for all that info, I’ll make sure I order from someone that offers both so I have the option to order one for manual trans.
