Fox Sunroof ??

My son just bought a '90 GT.
It has a cloth sunroof/moonroof that I've never seen before.
Anybody have any info about these?

Looks like an aftermarket ragtop deal - the only sunroofs/moonroofs I've seen on Foxes were the flip-up/ removable glass panel that came with a little storage bag...

My thoughts exactly.
From my limited viewpoint, it appears to be unique.
That's why I'm hoping someone has some info on it.
I'm sure that eventually we'll be looking to repair or replace it.

Oh gurus of the foxes, we call upon you and your knowledge of all things foxy...

I've never seen anything like it on a Mustang......look and see if there is a manufacturer name anywhere on the car. Pictures of it from underneath or with the cover off may help give a clue as well.....

SVOPaul, if you haven't seen it, it's even more unique than I thought.
Next time my son is home same time as me, I'll see if I can get some better pics.

I am sure it is an aftermarket thing. More than likely NOT dealer installed... Doe it make it "rare"? Only in the sense that it was done by some local shop. But, if your son likes it, that is all that counts...

We were hoping that it wasn't too rare and that someone could suggest a source for parts.
Looked at it fairly closely today, and I believe it probably is something installed by an aftermarket shop. Only identifying mark I could find on it was under the handle. (Some additional pics are attached.) Closest thing I've seen to it is the sunroof on older VW Bugs.

Actually, my son isn't that crazy about it. We're hoping that this was installed in the standard sunroof cutout, and we can replace it with a glass mustang sunroof. Anybody know what the dimensions are for '90 mustang sunroof?

Looks like a little 'cut and paste' is in order...seems a bit large for a factory roof hole.

Thanks for the response.
Looks a little on the big side to me too.
Measured from inside the car, the cutout is 28" wide by 28 1/2" front to back.
I'm sure there's a diagram somewhere that lists the dimensions of the stock '90 sunroof, but I haven't found it yet. (admittedly, it hasn't been a priority.)

wow...that is definitely different, thats for sure...if it were me, I would try to find some place to take it that can take that "thing" off and repair it to make it look normal again, either putting in a sunroof or filling it in altogether...

If you can't find a factory swap reasonably done, I would probably take it to a conversion shop and at least get that cleaned up to a more factory like condition. My Cobra was originally a sunroof car, but after a theft and rollover, a solid top was cut in. I would love to do a factory sunroof on my car. I'm sure some shop here in Houston could do it.

Thanks for the responses guys.
Now a question for the body shop guys.
How about a quick guestimate on what it might cost to replace this thing with a solid sunroof?
Even an aftermarket would be acceptable. (Might be an idea for a Christmas present.)
Keep in mind I'm in So Cal, and we don't live in the real world.
I know, I know... get off my dead b*** and research it myself.

My guess at replacing this with a "factory" style roof is going to be a bit pricey. My brother has a TVR that has a Fabric roof so I'm sending him your pictures to see what he thinks, oh yeah he is the one who restores my Foxes and vintage British racers so if he knows I hope that will help!!

Seeing that you are in So. California, it is very possible that the top was contracted to be installed by the original selling dealer by a local trim shop. There are a couple of ways to repair it:
insert a repair panel from an original roof skin w/ or w/o factory sunroof,
have the complete roof replaced several inches down the pillars.
Either option will be costly. Look at any paperwork and see if this top was installed by the dealer, there were some early Mustangs with this type conversion. kennyg

Looks like a dealer hired one of those "custom" shops to install it. Those places did sunroofs, vinyl roofs, continental kits etc. If it were me, I'd live with it, have it recovered and resealed. Anything else would be too expensive.

Thanks guys.
Looks like we have a number of sunroof installers within 30 minutes or so.
And bodyshops galore.
When my son can scrounge up some money, we'll be taking the car to some installers and bodyshops for an estimate on replacing this thing.
