Flowmasters Versus Cherry Bombs, and X VS H pipe
Flowmasters Versus Cherry Bombs, and X VS H pipe
So, for a 5.0 Mustang, which sounds better, some Cherry Bomb mufflers, or Flowmaster mufflers?
And, what is the sound and performance difference between an X pipe and H pipe

I've never heard cherry bombs on a 5.0, I thought they were more of an old-school thing, but you can't go wrong with flowmasters for sound. The only problem I have with flowmaster is the low quality steel they use which is guaranteed to rust right after you install the mufflers. I have a Mac h-pipe and catback system and they use the same crappy steel as flowmaster but they put a black coating over it to prevent rust but mines fairly rusted despite that. I believe flowmaster and mac are both chambered style mufflers so they probably sound very similar.
One of the guys here has an '85 GT with an x-pipe and flows and it sounds a little raspier and maybe higher pitched than my h-pipe, I've always read an h-pipe is more of the deep classic musclecar rumble and an x is more raspy and wicked. X pipes are supposed to flow better for more power but in my opinion the difference is minimal and only in the upper RPM range at that. It seems the modular motors and especially the 03/04 cobras benefit more from an X. I think you'd be happy with either H or X pipe.
If you want a higher quality exhaust system, Magnaflow, Bassani, Borla, and Pypes are all stainless systems although I'm not sure what they offer for 5.0s anymore. A friend is currently building an all-out showcar '86 Capri and he's running the Pypes brand catback system and it looks and sounds amazing, its a "spiral perforated core" (or something like that) straight-through design muffler instead of the traditional chambered style like flowmaster and mac.

I heard the same thing about H-pipes, but the source wasn't exactly reputable. Thanks for the reinforcement! I don't want the car getting higher pitched, as low rumbling is what I like. I've been watching videos on youtube with Cherry Bomb Glasspack'ed V8's on Mustangs, they make a mean sound, but what I can't tell from the videos is how loud they are. Other people have told me they are somewhere around the loudest mufflers you can find, but can anyone here back that up too?
Just got cherrybombs hooked up to collectors on a set of longtubes on my 82. I'll get a video with sound on here tomorrow..
Annnnnnnnnnnnnnd here go.. slight overheating..and a lack of a gas line clamp...but oughta have her at the picnic. :roxor:
Longtubes & cherrybombs...
'cause the @$*&# file is too big to go on photobucket...

I know this i a little late, but I put a stainless x pipe and mufflers from the 'pypes' brand...I have had them on for a year now, an they still look and sound good. It cost me a little over $300 for the entire exhaust from my headers (I bought my headers separately).
Most all of my friends have Flowmaster 40 series on their foxes, I personally have never been in the presence of cherry bombs on a later model Mustang, just early Mustangs.
