Hi Guys,

How do I check codes on my 92 5.0? Do I need a hand held for this?, if so, does it plug in near the wiper motor ?(think I read that somewhere).

I have I thread about my car running like poo, I've decided to check the codes before throwing parts at it.

You need a scanner....the test leads are on the driver side near the hood hinge/wiper motor. Any auto parts store like Advance or Autozone will have a scanner that they will put on for you at no charge.

I went to Advance auto and used there loaner scanner. My codes are 11, not sure what that is, 10, not sure on that one either, 33 (EGR valve), and 41 (HO2 sensor, lean bank 1).

Few questions......

I got the EGR valve, but didn't get the O2 sensors. They want to know if my wiring harness is 8.5 inch or 16.5, any1 know? Any idea what the 10 and 11 codes are?

DANG!!

Now my CEL stays on after installing the new EGR valve.

The only thing I can think of is mybe I should have used the stock gasket for the egr sensor?

 

I think the code needs to be cleared from the computer even after replacing a sensor. Disconnect your battery for 10 minutes then try it again.

When I went to get the O2 sensors, there was a choice of 8 1/2 inch wiring harness or 16 1/2.

 

oh oh oh, I don't remember them asking me when I got my O2 sensors but the wires didn't seem 16 inches long. I would imagine the 8 1/2 are for stock and shorty headers and the 16 1/2 is for long tubes. Unless someone else chimes in with a definite answer, I suggest getting the 8 1/2 and if they aren't right just take them back and get the other ones.

Let me find my code book to look up those 10 and 11 codes.

 

this is taken from the manual that came with code reader I linked to in my first post:

"code 11 means that all the relays and actuators and their related circuits that were tested during the the KOER self-test are OK, and no faults were found"

For the Key On, Engine Running test (KOER):
"code 10 is not a fault code. the vehicles computer uses code 10 to signal the operator to perform a Wide Open Throttle test (quickly press and release the accelerator pedal). If you fail to press the accelerator to the floor, a Dynamic Test Failure Code may be generated.

For the Key On, Engine Off test: code 10 is just a seperation code used to seperate the first group of codes (KOEO Self Test Codes) from the Continuous Memory group of codes

Well, it turns out my EGR valve was fine. The Valve isn't opening due to a faulty EGR vacuum solenoid (spelling). At least I think that's what it is, when I put my finger on the vacuum hole inside the solenoid, the EGR valve than opens.................Lesson learned I guess. Look further into the codes, not always cut and dry. F the EGR for now, need to get cash for the **** oxygen sensors. Hmm, hope it's actually the oxygen sensors and not something else causing them to not work...............We'll see.

When I changed the O2s in my car it made a world of difference.

 

Got the sensors, gonna put them in this week end

Hope the f'ers come out without a battle.

 

Ok, even though u pole smokers forgot about me and don't care anymore.......

I installed the O2 sensors today, the old ones came out very easy. They were actually very loose. The car runs much better, not perfect, but 100 times better than before.
