Can Fuel from fuel pump get into oil?

I've got an '82 GT with a 5.0, Motorcraft 2bbl etc. All stock, original.

Had some bad gas a while ago. Ran like crap. I think 10% ethanol ate up gaskets. Don't know. Never had a problem like this in the 20 years I've owned it. Alway started up fine before.

Changed oil, fuel filter, and drained gas. Fired it up and ran fine BUT.. noticed a significant amount of fuel dripping from fuel pump on the garage floor. Can't tell from where in the fuel pump but it was from the fuel pump.

Stopped and checked oil. Doesn't smell like gas but level is about 1/2 qt high.

Is there a way for fuel to get into the motor from the fuel pump? If the rubber etc in the fuel pump disintigrates is this possible?

Thanks.

Yes it can. On a mechanical fuel pump, the diaphram can rupture allowing gas to pass into the lubercation passage of the engine. I've had this happen to me. As the oil thins with gas, your oil pressure will drop.

Thanks guys!!

It looks like a major disaster was avoided.

It ran for a few minutes in the garage. Oil pressure looked OK and it ran fine.
I thought I put 6 quarts in it instead of 5..but I haven't seen a 6 quart jug of Valvoline 10W30.

It needs a water pump anyway so now is a good time to do both.

I dropped the tank and replaced the lines, fuel filter, fresh gas. Next the pump.
Anything else to look for that might have gotten messed up?

I wonder if the station had some E85 put in the wrong tank!!! Never seen E85 at an Amoco but I haven't looked for it.

The fuel pump was shot!!! Fuel pouring out of the relief valve and out of the back into the motor.

Replaced the FP, water pump, fuel lines, hoses, fuel & oil filters, dropped the tank and dumped the gas. All of this needed to be done anyway. It was fun!

Runs great now and the oil level is right where it should be.

Wow. Very nice. Don't think I'll ever see one of those around here. Especially in that condition. What do you do about the tires though? Odd size IIRC.

They are an odd size - 190/65/390 TRX metric. Not dry rotted yet but too old to drive on. I plan on getting some rims/tires for it. I do plan on driving it more than I have.

Coker tire has TRX's for $400 ea That's too much!! Thinking about some Cobra R rims and 235-245/50/16 or 17's Don't know yet. But I'll keep the TRX's for shows, if I ever show it.

Beautiful GT!!!!!

Thanks. I thought about a few mods but I've kept it stock for 20 years and don't really know if it's a good idea..there are so few of these around. Kind of cool that it's factory stock.

Things I was going to do years ago but never did:
- I have a couple of Holly 4bbls off of '83 and '85 GT's I used to own and might throw one on it. I
like AFB's better though.
- Always hated the SROD 4 spd. Might do a T-5.
- Dual exhaust, shorties and 2 chamber Flows. I have a double hump cross member somewhere.
- 8.8 and 3.73s
- Might dig out an old pair of SouthSide bars and put them on.
- Another member had a good idea to pull out the Recaros and put some other seats in it since
Recaro seat covers are non-existent.

Still don't know. It is such a dinosaur compared to my '08. But that's how it used to be. Kind of a flashback to drive it. A smile and a grimace at the same time.
