Backfire, spit, and sputter...

When idling, my car backfires out of the throttle. When you give it gas, it stalls for a minute before gaining rpms. I've set timing a few times with spout connecter out. When I set it to 12 degrees btdc and put connector back in it goes way past that (larger number btdc.) Plugs are new and gapped at Ford specs (.054). Wires also new. I've checked fuel pressures and replaced a couple of lines with kinks, but problem still exists. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

it will go up when its plugged back in that normal. but you should have the car off when plugging and unplugging the spout

Is it possible that I am not getting enough spark from ignition coil, and it needs to be replaced? Just a rookie grabbing at straws here...

Things I would do:

1. Pull codes and post any/all you get
2. Check for a vacuum leak
3. Set the timing back to stock

Is the car modded in any way, other than timing? I'd recommend against guessing and throwing parts at the problem.

Pull the distributor cap and check for moisture or and tracking marks where fire can be jumping across the cap.
