I've been looking for a clean 5.0L LX for awhile now and have been focusing on 5-speed cars but a really nice 93 Auto has come along at a great price that I am seriously interested in. So what I need to know is, how much slower is the auto than a comparable 5-speed car? Are there reliability issues with the auto trannys? Are they 3 speed or AOD's? I haven't owned an automatic car in a long, long time so it would take some getting used to. I'd like to act fast so any help would be greatly appreciated!

I can only speak from the vantage point of 2.3 four cylinders
But, the standard is definately quicker.
However, I opted most for the auto for city driving.
And last but not least the ability to put on remote start from up to a mile away seems some what safer. Plus the remote I have yet to buy has a siren off and a vibrating feature that notifys me and not the burglar. Have not purchased it yet but I would not want it on a standard. just would'nt trust it.

Here is a link to a thread in which Maddhatter asks the same question and we provided some opinions.

Wait until you find a nice 5-speed, you will be much happier with the car in the long run. I had an auto fox once and it was a DOG. Totally crappy trans, slow as dirt, and I had it rebuilt twice in 50k, and I bought the car new so I know it wasn't ragged out.

I think the price is a steal considering it's never had an accident (original paint!) and has a whack of mods: shorty headers, full Flowmaster exhaust, Hurst short shifter, 3.73 gears with a fresh traction-lok, Centerforce clutch, pony wheels, front clear corners and a powerful sound system. It's only need is tires which are cheap enough. Score!

It's a customer's plane, I'm an aircraft mechanic. As for the car, future plans are tires, under-bumper ram air set-up (anyone running this?) and some general TLC like paint touch-ups and interior clean-up. Then again, that blower is tempting...
