89 Mustang GT

I just bought this 89 for $1,000 I am going to do a complete restore it has high mileage but I am planning on replacing the engine and the whole drivetrain. So was $1,000 dollars a good buy for a 25th year Mustang?

My intension is to buy a crate motor from Ford Racing since the car has about 217,000 miles on it. I am expecting the restore to cost me around $15,000 by the time I finish in a couple of years. I have my 05 for my weekend toy till the 89 is finished. I appreciate the offer for advice if I need it I am sure I will hit an occasional snag.

I would rebuild the stock engine and keep it a numbers matching car. I think it would save you a few buck also.
If the car runs and stops and the int. is not totally trashed its worth the 1000 you paid

yeah, I've noticed GTs aren't bringing much money these days, especially beat up ones, across from my school somebody is selling a black 88 GT with an lx bumper and aftermarket fog ligths, other then that its all stock down to the turbines. It might be an AOD, but all they want for it is 900OBO and its been in the driveway for 900 for about 10 months.....I'm thinking of handing them 400 cash and see where it takes me...its in good shape too, no visible rust!

+1. I had a 88 Black GT T-Tops. I loved that car. I wish I still had it. Gotta love those 5.0's. They're real easy to work on and modify. Go for it and good luck.

For the price I think you did very well. I paid over 4 times that for my 87 GT. Although it was low mileage and in excellent shape.

Let's just say, I've seen basket cases go for more than that. So all in all that was a steal!

I am just going to take my time with this car. Just received my Chiltons CD it shows pretty good break downs of the car much better than buying the book although a little more expensive. Thanks everybody for the positive feed back. By the way does anybody know where I can get a new hatchback it seems to be where the rust is the worst . I know I could save it but there is just to much area that is hidden inside the hatch and after I do all this work I don't want any rust popping up on me later. I have found a none metal hatchback but that is not really what I want.

I know this might sound crazy but get your self a U-haul and come out here to Phoenix, we have a salvage yard that just does Mustangs and I bet you could find everyhting you need RUST FREE BABY!!! If not I'll give you the name and they ship but its much cheaper to pull it yourself!!

That sounds like a great idea but that is a awful long way from Richmond,Va. I think if I did that it would have to be a road trip with the 05 to see the sights in Arizona. I would have to use all of my mod. money in gas to go that far hauling a trailer.

Well the tear down of my 89 is under way. I've noticed some rust on the shock towers and around the gas tank it should not be to bad to fix. But my real question is if anybody knows of a good place to buy new wiring harness's for a 89 GT.
