‘89 Mustang 2.3l

A question about intermittent acceleration issues.
Occasionally, while my car seems to run smooth with no missing it lacks power when accelerating. It will max out at about 3000rpm and feel sluggish. It actually feels a little like a rev limiter kicking in. Simply turning off the key and restarting…or even a quick off and back on again while moving (manual transmission) and all is well again. I’m not able to tell when I start the car if this peculiar condition will be present. It’s only when I start driving that I become aware.
This is a summer only car and the issue first appeared about a year ago but so far this spring, it has become more apparent.
BTW, last fall just before storing for the winter,
I had a transmission swap done..auto to 5 speed manual, but as mentioned this issue was already in play but seems to be more often now.
The Mustang expert that did the swap did not change the ECM. In his experience going from auto to manual, it is not necessary. But if doing the opposite, he does swap the ECM.
Idle speed while in gear (automatic) is the main difference between the 2 ECM’s but so far, now that it’s a 5 speed, I have not had any issues with idle speed.
Anyway, if anyone has any ideas I’d like to hear them. Thanks.

Thanks for the suggestion. I have not changed the fuel filter since I’ve owned it..4 years.
Im not doubting your suggestion but I’m wondering why this is only an issue while the car has warmed up and never present as long as I keep driving. I can go for hours and all is fine. It’s only after a brief engine off stop that the hesitation is present. Then once I’m rolling and in high gear, if I quickly turn key off and back on…all is fine again.

And yes I did check for codes but nothing came up, no fuel or electrical issues.

It Could Be A Component That Has Issues After HEAT SOAK. A Restricted Fuel Filter Could Overheat Pump as Well. A Tough One To Chase But a Fuel Filter is a Good Thing To Change Anyway! Turns Into Process of Elimination!

The Ignition Module's on These Were Problematic as Well. Now That I Think About it! Even The Special GEL That was Applied To Mounting Surface Could Cause Issues if it Broke Down. Search for Ford ICM TFI Issues and it's Pretty Common! This was Back in the 80's When I Was Selling a Lot of Modules. Lots of Water Under The Bridge Since Then!

Here Was The Class Action Settlement on the TFI Modules!

Here is a Interesting Paragraph!

Making the problem even more insidious is its phantom nature. A TFI module can fail on an intermittent basis when hot, then function again when the engine cools, without leaving a trace of physical evidence that the TFI module had failed.
