3.73 gear install.

Well guys, I have recently purchased a 1984 GT with a decently built 302 that really puts the power down. Right now the car has 4.56 gears behind a T5 tranny. The setup is great for smoking the tires or being immature but sometimes I want to go over 60 without the fear of tearing everything to pieces. I have a set of 3.73 gears from Ford racing that I got with the car when I bought it, my question is how hard is the install? I am very mechanically inclined but almost all of my knowledge is about engines and most of that is diesels anyway. If someone could point me in the direction of a great write up that would be fantastic. Also, if I had the car up on jacks and all that for this install would it be worth it to do the 5 lug conversion at the same time? And what do I need for that conversion? Any and all information would be great.

I can't comment on the gear install because I haven't done one myself, but I can comment on the 5-lug swap. If your 84 still has the stock front spindles, calipers and struts, all of that will need to be changed to the 87-up stuff, because the 5-lug rotors wil not fit. But, if you can get your hands on a set of the 87-93 spindles and calipers, you can buy the 5-lug front conversion and struts and bolt them right on.

The back conversion will be the same on your 84 as an '87-93. Just slide out the stock 28-spline axles when you are changing the gears and use the 5-lug drums in the kit.

If you understand backlash then you can probably do your own gears assuming you have the right tools. If you don't, pay someone it will save you money in the long run.
