Would you ever abandon your car?

I mean, I guess I could understand if you were planning on fixing it up over the long haul... But I'm not sure this is the case here. If anything you could probably sell it. SOMEONE would be willing to pony up for it. Especially considering this is in southern California. One of our writers thinks it's abandoned but... I'm not convinced. The club and the mostly inflated tires see to suggest that it isn't completely forgotten.

In any case, why do you think this Mustang was left to rust? Best story gets a cookie.

If the registration is current (and it has to be to be parked on the street in California), then I would hardly say it's abandoned. It also has to be moved every few days (according to the laws I'm aware of), and I would also think that the best chance of finding the person would be to stake out the car on weekends, which is probably the most likely time the person would move it.

I would guess that the person that owns it probably lives within 100 yards of where it's parked.

If anyone here is a cop in the area, they could easy do a search of DMV records to find the current owner, but that would be a severe abuse of power/resources.

Why it's left to rust? It's a 66 6cyl coupe - not rare, not special, not worth a lot. Assuming it runs, and it's relatively rust-free underneath and has little/no structural damage, it might be worth $3-5k. If it was a fastback, it would be a lot more interesting.

people do dumb things- I know I have.

back just out of highschool, bought a fairly decent 69 camaro with a busted engine. plan was to swap motor/sell it to buy mustang parts. instead, started working 70-90 hours a week for several years, got my mustang stuff, forgot about the camaro... time I got back to it a couple years later, rust had really set in. paperboy used to ask me every time he'd see me if I'd sell it, no... got a house/garage, put it inside that winter, started working more on it, decided too rusty- called and had it hauled away by one of the 'junk cars hauled free' guys in the paper. I did pull a lot of the desirable parts off it, but years later, realized the shell wasnt really that bad at all. still feel bad I didnt just give it to the paperboy instead of letting a decent car rot.
