Question

For some reason, I've develop a pretty severe case of wheelhop that wasn't present before. I'm leaning toward changing rear shocks, but open to suggestions & ideas. Not really interested in a spring change unless it's last resort. Thought about banding the front of each leaf. Anyone tried that?

Shelby Underrides
HD 4 leaf springs
Magna_Gas shocks
Pinion angle is 2* up / tranny angle is 3* down

Had no wheelhop until last year. Got minor wheelhop after switching to fairly sticky 235/45-17's. This year, with the 5-speed, I can really "shock" the rear tires, and ANY severe launch hops pretty good. The rear passes the old "one bounce on the bumper" shock test, but I'm wondering if they're a little too soft for the relatively heavy Versailles rear?

Thoughts, comments, links, real-world experiences? :worship:

Maybe it has to do with changing your gramma automatic to a more respectable 5 speed.

I found these at the web site I posted earlier. There is specific talk in the drag shock section about wheel hop, I included the leaf spring lik for good measure. But, I'm betting it is the new trans

Cloney,

The thing about wheel hop is that it’s caused by the springs tendency to wind-up i.e. load-up pressure when sudden & high amounts of torque are applied and it’s the release of this pressure and the tires inability to maintain traction, that causes the wheel to hop. Even with under-rides, you’re still going to have some wind-up because you cannot adjust the amount of tension on the springs.

I'm running 5 leaf reverse eye springs, with Koni shocks, 3/4 sway, and TM under-rides. So my rear end is VERY tight (yeah, yeah I've heard all the tight rear jokes OK )

When running my street tires (Nitto 555's ), if I drop the hammer with my T5, I also experience wheel hop, but it's generally felt toward the end of the run out. However, when I run drag slicks, I don’t feel a thing. So it stands to reason that my drag slicks do a better job at absorbing some of the initial shock load and allow a smoother transition of spring tension as the wheel speed increases due to their soft sidewall and superior traction.

I think in your case, the auto trans & torque converter were not shocking the springs hard enough to cause significant initial spring wind-up so there was less energy to release. Now that you’ve got a more respectable trany, and you’re out have some REAL fun , you’re simply experiencing the more direct connection a manual trans offers.

If you’re looking to eliminate wheel hop altogether, you should be looking at traction bars that you can preload, such as Caltrack’s, or Slide-a-links.
