From what i have been hearing, it seems that for a beginner like me the 289 engine is the way to go in the 67 and 68 mustangs. the only concern i have is the horsepower. i want a fast and powerful car, and it seems that the 298 runs a little low in this area. what kinds of mods can i do to improve the engine power and get it as fast as the 390?

Lots you can do to the 289/302...

351W heads
cam
overbore
headers
intake
carb
stroker kit

It's all about how much you want/can spend.

The sky (and your bankroll) is the limit when it comes to what you CAN do with these cars.

I HIGHLY recommend actually getting a car, driving it, and evaluating what you do / don't like before planning changes. You may find, for instance, that a brake upgrade may be a much more desirable use of your funds than adding more power.

No offense , but until you actually have a car, and know what you NEED to upgrade, you're just "spinning your wheels", IMO.............. Nothing wrong with "planning", but you really need a base to begin planning from.
