Alright, here goes the first attempt at a forum build up of a car in need. I got tired of talking about and decided let's just do it and then see what we need to change and/or avoid.
So, in the other thread I proposed the rule that the car must come off eBay and the auction must be closed. This way we can set the starting cost at the next winning bid.
I will also try and take some of the techniques that Foose appears to use in the process of developing the concept etc. to actually "naming" the car. After the car introduction and some of the basic project steering I will open some other threads based on different aspects of the build to get those underway.
This should be fun .
Build Links: Paint and Body
Powertrain
Suspension and Steering
Wheels/Tires and Brakes
Interior Details
Basic Concept: For this one we are going to follow the latest trend today and that is Pro-Touring / G-Machine. This is not a track car or a trailer queen. This car will be built to perform like a modern vehicle in an old car's skin. You can become more familiar with the scene at http://www.pro-touring.com
Budget: $59,999.99
Canvas: 1969 Ford Mustang Convertible
eBay: Item No: 2494096253
Description: Up for auction is my California made 1969 mustang H code convertible one of the first 959 cars made for that model year. I purchased this car about six months ago with the intention of restoring or doing a restomode. My plans have since changed. Here is some info. 1969 ford mustang convertible factory H code 250hp 351 windsor w/9” rear end, power top, power disc brakes, power steering (removed) auto, factory red on red.
NEW: cooper cobra GT tires (less than 1k mls), radiator, battery, flowmaster exhaust, rear leaf springs, 1” lowering springs, fan, brake booster, power top pump, 1 3/8 front sway bar, export brace.
REBUILT: master cylinder, brakes, and transmission.
BODY: the paint is poor, needs top, front fenders, hood, 2 front aprons, core support have been replaced, 2 holes have been put into the shock towers for access to the grease fittings (easy fix). Frame rails, torque boxes, 3 floors, fenders, cowl, aprons, quarters, doors are all in good condition.
RUST: the driver rear floor needs patch or replace, couple spots on driver/pass door very minor.
ENGINE: 351 2v Windsor w/headers runs very strong sounds real nice.
GLASS: the glass is all original and in good condition w/exception to driver window.
CHROME: the chrome around the rear of the top as well as around the windshield is good the rest is fair.
INTERIOR: original, complete, used, dash cap.
EXTRA PARTS: since buying the car I have acquired some parts. Front valance, driver window (was missing) mustang emblem for fender, chrome piece for quarter, powers steering pump and other miscellaneous parts.
THE NUMBERS: 76A- convertible, standard interior. T- candy apple red. 2D-red vinyl 06J-september 6, 1968 72-San Jose 2-2:75 rear axle X-FMX auto transmission
This mustang would make a great project for some one. They made less that 11,000 converts for 1969 and red/red w/the 351 makes it even more rare. This car has lived in northern California since new. The warranty plate is still on driver door and vin on dash. Red oxide primer from the factory is still very evident under the car. This car runs, stops, drives very well. I would not be selling this car if I did not just buy an scj mach 1. Mustang converts of this model year are on the rise and this combo is very desirable. Note registration expired 11-03.
Closing Price: $7,602.00
Photos: (Blake and other Photochoppers, you should grab these in case they somehow get removed)
Current Bankroll: $52,297.99
Inspirations: Foose always has a few magazines and car photos around when getting things started. Here are some inspiring rides from around the Web:
The New Boss
Silver Mach

[SIZE=7]Project: Conversatile
[SIZE=1]OK, had the weekend to consider what was proposed... some really great ideas. Had to rely on my memory since the forum appeared to be out during my concious hours . I credit Blake with steering me back on course with this build, Cloney with reminding us about Troy, and I think Ember could step up with some great paint and body advice.
So the project is to take this and make it versatile. Meaning like pro-touring it can go and stop with the best of them, but it has to remain comfortable and streetable for a long ride on the Power Tour. It will also have to show well ... all while getting done on the $50,797.99 we have left to spend.
To narrow the build now let's take these major elements:
- Paint is going to be a two-tone. There should be only subtle body enhancements, we want this to be clean. Chrome bumpers could possibly stay (see Troy) but other elements must go. Any emblems that come back should be custom aka Silver Bullet style.
- Underhood needs to be stark and clean (see Troy again), the Mopar is a better example than the FFF in this one. Drivetrain is going to be the 4.6 package for the value and streetability. If budget allows we will charge it...
- Suspension should incorporate the IRS for the handling (an 03/04 setup will hold 500hp no problem) Up front one of the strut options will work. I'm going to nix the air bags since I don't believe they will enhance the handling (probably degrade it) and from a budget perspective it will get tight. Let's find a coilover conversion kit for a strut package...
- Wheels/Tires/Brakes ... going to limit wheel size to 18" for handling reasons and since the airbags are out. Brakes need to be BIG, it should stop like it goes.
- Interior, like the cover idea. If someone can show me a good looking version that fits (that Ronster is hideous). A roll bar would be good if we can make it look good too. Audio will be enough to have some background music, but nothing over the top for budget reasons.
Does this get us closer to finalizing it? Now we can be more creative on budget etc. B)

Are we dead in the water because of the server outages? Or course of the build plan? Lot of details to cover still... if I'm gonna do it myself we don't need to post it here
Seriously, if nothing else this is making finally calculate the cost of doing a 4.6 conversion with the IRS and other pieces.

Someone has gotta get serious about the interior with prices and parts... my head still hurts from sorting out the 4.6 setup. We need some more photochops to see how the paint ideas are going...
I don't wanna stronghand the concept too much.

ok, i'll blurt out my ideas
engine and drivetrain: do the 4.6/t-45/irs conversions, add a CDC shaker to the setup as well, full 2 1/2" exhaust with x-pipe and spintech mufflers with side exhaust, possibly using aar cuda style exhaust tips
paint and body: 2 tone red and charcoal gray(~$6,000), with shelby side scoops and decklid (~$600 from Branda), custom r-model style front valance with split bumper design (?), custom tonneau (?) and shelby rollbar with custom third brake light built in (~$800 bucks). charcoal gray convertible top (~1,000)
interior: 85-86 gt buckets with custom 2 tone medium gray and charcoal leather upholstery with red piping with back seats "built" to match style of front (~$12-1500), 69 deluxe door panels covered in charcoal leather (~$800-1000) with custom red anodized brushed aluminum inserts (should be just the cost of anodizing woodgrain inserts can be re-used without the woodgrain), jme guage cluster with autometer carbon fiber guages (~$1300) and red anodized brush aluminum trim to match door panels same style for passenger side dash piece, radio bezel and console inserts. console mount e-brake ( Bob, how much did your lokar kit run?).
chassis and brakes: RRS strut front conversion with coilovers, 13" rotors (phase 3 kit $4320) and RRS shock tower kit (195). RRS rack and pinion conversion ($1950) with baer tracker bump steer kit. previously mentioned cobra IRS with DVS kit and coilovers and baer 12" rear brakes. TCP subframe connector kit, will have to use cobra hydro-boost brake booster system due to 4.6 being too wide for a regular vacuum booster.
wheels and tires: 17" billet magums or billet marodder (67 shelby KH style) with BFG g-force kdw tires, 17x9 275/45-17's front, 17x11 315/35-17's rear
how's that Jay? anyone else got ideas for the whole car?

Do we have a fuel cell yet? What else is needed? Mainly Interior?
Since it's a 69, should we convert to 70 bolt-in windows?

We need interior and paint/body. A final set of photochops and it's done. I would put the fuel cell in the interior budget. That leaves $17k for the paint and body ... should be doable.
Anyone know more about the new PPG paint system that looks like polished aluminum???

I don't have anything finalized, sometimes a rough chop update can get people involved more with input. I understand you don't want to keep reworking, but if you have a rough one that will help.
